Police detained them after determining that they had been reading the Bible aloud, according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police launched proceedings against them on suspicion of \u201cinciting the public to hatred and hostility\u201d under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code before transferring them to the \u0130stanbul Provincial Directorate of Migration Management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian media reported that the couple had been taken to a deportation center and could face removal from Turkey. The Russian Consulate General in \u0130stanbul said its diplomats were in contact with their lawyer and Turkish officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case came about three months after two Greek tourists were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2026\/04\/14\/two-greeks-detained-for-waving-orthodox-christian-flag-in-hagia-sophia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0for displaying a flag bearing a Byzantine double-headed eagle and the Orthodox Christian slogan \u201cOrthodoxy or death\u201d on the upper floor of Hagia Sophia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An \u0130stanbul court later handed down 10-month suspended sentences to the pair on conviction of insulting a segment of society, after which the couple was released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hagia Sophia was built in the sixth century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and served for centuries as one of Christianity\u2019s most important churches.
