ALEXANDRIA BAY \u2015 A Copenhagen woman who allegedly failed to stop her vehicle for inspection at the Alexandria Bay port of entry and then fled from U.S. Border and Customs and Border Protection officers at speeds of 130 mph before crashing her car on Interstate 81 now faces federal criminal charges stemming from the incident.<\/p>\n
Maddesyn Jones, 22, is charged in U.S. District Court, Syracuse, with assaulting, resisting or impeding an officer engaged in the performance of official duties for the alleged June 24 incident.<\/p>\n
According to a criminal complaint filed with the court, border officers were already on the lookout for Jones\u2019s vehicle due to an incident three days before in which a white Honda Civic had passed through the Landsdowne, Ontario, port of entry \u2015 which is adjacent to the Alexandria Bay port of entry \u2015 without stopping for inspection at the Canadian border.<\/p>\n
Court documents show the vehicle is registered to Jones, listing a Lisbon address, and that Canadian Border Services agents issued an immigration warrant for Jones for the alleged crimes related to her entry into Canada.<\/p>\n
On June 24, U.S. Border Patrol officers were notified that a vehicle matching the description of Jones\u2019s vehicle had bypassed the bridge payment section for the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority and was traveling towards the Alexandria Bay port of entry.<\/p>\n
The vehicle did not stop at the inspection booth and continued south towards Interstate 81, according to court documents. Officers attempted to yell at the driver \u2015 later identified as Jones \u2015 to stop and other officers arranged their Border Patrol vehicles in an effort to stop Jones from continuing.<\/p>\n
At that point, Jones allegedly turned her vehicle around and drove back toward the inspection point. An officer in a marked vehicle drove up next to her with emergency lights activated, at which point she again turned around and tried to drive south on I-81.<\/p>\n
According to court documents, multiple attempts were made to stop Jones from evading the port of entry, including the use of a vehicle immobilization device used to flatten her vehicle\u2019s tires. She was also given many verbal warnings to stop her vehicle, turn it off and get out of it.<\/p>\n
Jones stopped, but allegedly refused to get out of her vehicle, and an officer approached her vehicle and struck her driver\u2019s side window with a collapsible steel baton in an effort to break the window.<\/p>\n
According to the complaint, the officer ordered Jones to shut off the vehicle, and she responded, \u201cI\u2019m not turning it off.\u201d The officer told Jones that she needed to get out of the vehicle and she allegedly responded to law enforcement by saying, \u201cYou are not removing me from this car.\u201d<\/p>\n
The officer attempted to extract Jones from the vehicle via the now-broken window, and Jones began to drive in reverse, nearly crushing the officer\u2019s legs between her vehicle and a Border Patrol vehicle.<\/p>\n
The complaint states that the officer quickly slid his body onto the hood of the two vehicles to avoid leg injuries and, as Jones drove forward, the officer removed his arms from the interior of Jones\u2019s vehicle. As he did so, his hands and arms were cut by the broken glass.<\/p>\n
Jones allegedly fled the inspection area at a high rate of speed, leaving tire traction marks on the pavement. She was also seen failing to stop at a stop sign while leaving the port of entry inspection area.<\/p>\n
Jones continued to travel southbound on I-81 at a high rate of speed as officers followed her with lights and sirens activated, with court documents stating her speed reached as high as 130 mph. About 10 miles south of the port of entry, Jones lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a ditch area off I-81 in the town of Orleans.<\/p>\n
The complaint states that the officer that tried to stop her vehicle at the inspection point was treated at an unspecified hospital for multiple cuts that required stitches and that Jones was also taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.<\/p>\n
According to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office, Jones faces a maximum of eight years in federal prison and a maximum fine of up to $250,000 if convicted of the charge.
