{"id":130759,"date":"2026-07-16T23:05:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T23:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/130759\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T23:05:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T23:05:12","slug":"eu-orders-google-to-share-search-data-and-open-android-system-to-ai-rivals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/130759\/","title":{"rendered":"EU orders Google to share search data and open Android system to AI rivals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Union<\/a> demanded Thursday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/google\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google<\/a> share data with other search engines and open up its Android system to rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI<\/a> services, but the US giant said the measures would put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/privacy\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">privacy<\/a> at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The move is the latest by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/brussels\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brussels<\/a> against the behemoth as it seeks to flex its muscles over Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p>The order was made under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n5RIyttFucU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EU&#8217;s flagship Digital Markets Act<\/a>\u00a0(DMA), which forces the world&#8217;s biggest tech firms to open to competition in a bid to give users more choice.<\/p>\n<p>The DMA is the b\u00eate noire of US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s administration, which accuses Brussels of unfairly targeting American companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\">Read more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/americas\/20260602-trump-signs-order-allowing-ai-companies-to-give-government-access-to-models-before-release\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump signs order seeking govt access to new AI releases<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brussels said Google must start sharing search data from January 2027 and users would start benefitting from the changes to Android from July 2027.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to these measures we hope to see emerging alternatives to Google Search and Google&#8217;s AI services, such as Gemini, and that users in the EU can enjoy greater choice of services,&#8221; EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the EU said Android phone users should be able to use their preferred AI chatbot via voice commands, similar to the &#8220;Hey Google&#8221; command.<\/p>\n<p> Privacy question <\/p>\n<p>The EU said sharing search data would &#8220;rebalance the playing field&#8221; but Google pushed back, saying the measures &#8220;introduce unprecedented risks to user privacy, device security, and national security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But Google&#8217;s head of global affairs Kent Walker said the EU moves risked &#8220;undermining vital privacy and security guardrails for millions of Europeans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\">Read more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/technology\/20260202-digital-sovereignty-have-trump-threats-spurred-european-awakening\" target=\"_self\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Digital sovereignty (1\/3): Have Trump\u2019s threats spurred a European awakening?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said AI assistants already could access Android and by sharing search data, &#8220;Europeans&#8217; private searches would be exposed to unfamiliar companies, without adequate anonymisation of the data and without user knowledge or consent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A senior European official insisted the EU &#8220;took integrity, security and privacy into utmost account&#8221;, and Brussels said the decision would ensure anonymisation of search data.<\/p>\n<p>The demand is legally binding as part of a procedure launched in January, but it is not a formal probe that could lead to fines.<\/p>\n<p>The scrutiny of Google does not end there, however.<\/p>\n<p>The EU could hit Google with a fine next week in a separate investigation under the DMA law, sources close to the matter told AFP, confirming a report in the Financial Times newspaper on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has the right to slap fines of up to 10 percent of a company&#8217;s total global turnover for violating the DMA.<\/p>\n<p>Fines are nothing new for Google.<\/p>\n<p>The EU hit the company with fines worth a total of 8.2 billion euros between 2017 and 2019 under different competition rules.
