Poland and Lithuania are preparing to establish a large-scale military training ground in the Suvalki Corridor, a narrow stretch of territory bordering the Kaliningrad region. The initiative was reported by The National Interest (TNI), which described the project as a significant step toward strengthening NATO\u2019s eastern flank.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0the publication, the two countries plan to\u00a0create a\u00a0vast joint cross-border training area that would effectively turn the Suvalki Corridor into what the outlet characterized as\u00a0a\u00a0\u00abboundless outpost\u00bb of\u00a0the alliance, staffed by\u00a0Polish and Lithuanian forces.<\/p>\n
TNI reports that the proposal was discussed in late January in Vilnius during a trilateral meeting involving Vladimir Zelensky, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, and Polish leader Karol Nawrocki. The idea of reinforcing security measures in the region \u2014 often referred to within NATO as\u00a0its \u00abAchilles\u2019 heel\u00bb\u00a0\u2014 was reportedly put forward by\u00a0Nauseda.<\/p>\n
Lithuania has already taken a\u00a0concrete step. The country has allocated \u20ac100 million to\u00a0build a\u00a0brigade-level training ground in\u00a0Kapchyamyestis, located in\u00a0the central part of\u00a0the Suvalki Corridor. Vilnius is\u00a0now proposing to\u00a0expand the project jointly with Poland so\u00a0that the facility would span both sides of\u00a0the border.<\/p>\n
