During the \u201cWild Nineties,\u201d the region was searching for a steady footing while grappling with its newfound independence, experiencing rampant unemployment, and living under the thumb of widespread organized crime. Historic landmarks remain throughout the city, including\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/lnm.lt\/en\/museums\/gediminas-castle-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gediminas Castle<\/a>, which overlooks Vilnius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The city\u2019s old-versus-new paradigm is evident as visitors cross the Neris River via the four bridges that connect Old Town to the more contemporary side of the city, home to modern architecture and new tech businesses. While there is plenty to enjoy in those areas, such as the \u0160nipi\u0161k\u0117s business district, much of Vilnius\u2019s soul and spirit is present in Old Town, which has much to see and do in its 1.4 square miles.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy the Christmas spirit at holiday markets<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">With a sprawling Christmas market spread across Cathedral Square\u2014one of Old Town\u2019s central squares\u2014that boasts dozens of small huts full of confections and delicious chocolate, hot wine, holiday decorations, and the official Christmas tree. The organization recognizes a different city each year\u00a0\u201cfor their outstanding holiday traditions, commitment to community spirit, and creative festive experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visit a historic prison transformed into a hip artist complex\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \"><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/article\/lukiskes-prison-vilnius-lithuania\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luki\u0161k\u0117s Prison<\/a>\u2014a Baroque prison complex located near the border of Vilnius\u2019s Old Town and its more modern business district\u2014is an example of how the city\u2019s historic landmark transformed into a popular destination with a new purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">What was once a notorious prison that housed murderers, gangsters, and political prisoners, is now a sprawling campus that houses dozens of artists\u2019 studios, a recording studio, a beer garden in the summertime, and a Christmas market during the holidays. Visitors can take a tour of the prison, which has served as the backdrop for popular TV series and movies, and a stage for massive concerts featuring artists such as M83,\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ybNTlNpOVe0\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard<\/a>, and Denzel Curry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIsn\u2019t it amazing that this place, which was so dark, is now full of art and music and light?\u201d says Gintautas Ulmis, one of the prison\u2019s tour guides.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Of course, visitors can see more of the city\u2019s art scene beyond the former jail. Plan to spend at least an hour or two to fully absorb and enjoy the exhibitions, including the museum\u2019s current features, \u201cForever Temporary,\u201d which is a look at how identity is defined from the Middle Ages to the present day, and \u201cEyes and Fields,\u201d a two-person show featuring the multimedia work of artists\u00a0Kazimiera Zimblyt\u0117-Kaz\u0117 and Rose Lowder.<\/p>\n<p>A world-class dining destination\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In just the last few years, Vilnius has built its reputation as a thriving food city and home to\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/vilnius-region\/vilnius_1985479\/restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michelin-starred<\/a> and listed restaurants, such as the must-visit\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/vilnius-region\/vilnius_1985479\/restaurant\/pas-mus\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pas Mus<\/a>, which focuses on a variety of preservation techniques, including fermentation, pickling, blackening, and drying. Chef and owner Vita Bartininkaite and her staff have created a 10-course tasting menu that includes a single oyster sitting on top of a plump bed of lichen, a small slice of beetroot\u2014a Lithuanian staple\u2014topped with a rose petal, and a scallop \u201cpizza,\u201d with paper-thin layers of the mollusk sitting on a triangular cut of celery root.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The more austere farm-to-table\u00a0<a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/14horses.lt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">14Horses<\/a>\u00a0sources most of its ingredients from its own farm, which is just 43 miles from Vilnius. The restaurant offers a flavorful four-course prix fixe menu featuring choices such as a bone marrow taco, lightly deep-fried shitake mushrooms, and a delicious root vegetable pot pie. In 1997, its residents declared U\u017eupis an independent nation, replete with its own constitution, president, anthem, and currency. U\u017eupis is not officially recognized as a nation, and the idea of sovereignty has always been a bit tongue-in-cheek. Its self-proclaimed independence is indicative of the free-spirited nature of the bohemians who created U\u017eupis in their image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Today, rising real estate prices in U\u017eupis have driven out most of its free-spirited founders, but it remains an arts haven, with its alleyways dotted with sculptures and murals.
