The court on Friday granted VAATC\u2019s request for interim measures in a civil case brought by the municipal company against Energesman.<\/p>\n
Until a final ruling is issued, but no later than 31 December 2026, the court barred Energesman from interfering with VAATC\u2019s waste management activities at the Vilnius mechanical-biological waste treatment facilities.<\/p>\n
“The exceptional circumstances caused by the emergency situation and Energesman\u2019s actions provide grounds for applying interim measures and temporarily resolving the situation until a final decision is made,” court spokesman Giedrius Janonis told ELTA.<\/p>\n
Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the ruling would allow VAATC, a company owned by municipalities in the Vilnius region, to take over the Gari\u016bnai waste sorting centre.<\/p>\n
“Thank you to the court for taking into account the unusual nature of the situation. One private company effectively held everyone hostage, creating a mountain of problems while focusing more on Facebook posts than waste sorting,” Benkunskas said on Facebook.<\/p>\n
“We will still need help from other companies to manage waste flows for some time. The key thing is that waste collection for residents continues without interruption and that bills do not rise because of this situation,” he added.<\/p>\n
The ruling takes effect immediately but can be appealed to the Vilnius Regional Court within seven days.<\/p>\n
The waste management crisis in the Vilnius region emerged after VAATC terminated its contract with on 10 July for operating the mechanical-biological treatment facilities, citing the company\u2019s difficulties in meeting its obligations. Energesman turned to the court over the move.<\/p>\n
VAATC head Marius \u0160vaikauskas said large amounts of waste had been accumulating at the plant since March.
