The Jewish man who was stabbed by a screwdriver-wielding madman yelling\u00a0\u201cAllahu Akbar!\u2019\u2019\u00a0during a rampage on the Upper West Side was seen on video clutching his chest moments after the attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A stunned Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, 50 \u2014 described by a neighbor Friday as a quiet \u201cvery, very nice\u2019\u2019 man \u2014 is seen holding a tissue to his chest as he sits sprawled on a street corner waiting for emergency services.<\/p>\n

He was wearing a yarmulke when he walked out of a synagogue on the Jewish holiday of Tisha B\u2019Av, at Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street, and was attacked in broad daylight.<\/p>\n

His alleged assailant, Raul Morales, screamed \u201cAllahu Akbar!,\u201d Arabic for \u201cGod is greater!\u2019\u2019 before driving the screwdriver into Grunhaus\u2019 chest, according to police and the video.<\/p>\n

Moments earlier, around 1:30 p.m., Morales allegedly attacked Chok Sung, 57, stabbing him in the back with a knife, at West 84th Street and Central Park West, cops said.<\/p>\n

Both victims were brought to Saint Luke\u2019s Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, according to police.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrible, especially in this neighborhood,\u2019\u2019 said a 65-year-old doctor who only gave her first name, Helen, adding that she has known Grunhaus for the 11 years she\u2019s lived in the same Upper West Side building.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very rare,\u2019\u2019 the Jewish woman said of the local violence. \u201cIt\u2019s just repugnant.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very, very nice man, so I cannot even imagine how he feels,\u2019\u2019 she said of Grunhaus, who she described as \u201creligious in the sense that he keeps Shabbat\u2019\u2019 and \u201cjust a little New Yorker\u2019\u2019 who lives alone.<\/p>\n

Helen said her neighbor \u201cis not somebody who you would expect to \u2026 get stabbed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always to himself, very nice,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cIt is terrible, terrible.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he is a really wonderful man.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Morales, 51, was caught around 2:45 p.m. \u2014 fewer than 90 minutes after the attacks \u2014 after he barricaded himself inside a NYCHA apartment just blocks away from where police say he attacked Grunhaus.<\/p>\n

A witness observed Morales walking erratically and shouting incoherently \u2014 including yelling the word \u201cIslam\u201d \u2014 on Columbus Avenue near West 86th Street roughly half an hour after officers responded to the first stabbing.<\/p>\n

A knife and screwdriver were recovered following his arrest, police said.<\/p>\n

Investigators are probing whether Morales was motivated by hate, but Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said mental health may have been a driving factor.<\/p>\n

Activists said the attack on Grunhaus was prejudiced because he was clearly leaving Tisha B\u2019Av service and wearing a kippah.<\/p>\n

Morales was charged Friday afternoon<\/a> with attempted murder and assault \u2014 both as hate crimes \u2014 in the attack on Grunhaus.<\/p>\n
