Several people injured at a Berlin LGBT event after ‘vehicle drove into crowd’ | <\/p>\nAt least one person has died and 17 others have been injured after a van ploughed into a crowd at an LGBT event in Berlin.<\/p>\n
Police said on social media that officers and emergency services were responding to an incident in the city\u2019s central Tiergarten park, close to the Brandenburg Gate, where a vehicle had struck multiple people.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are searching intensively for the suspect,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n
After crashing the van, the suspect allegedly attacked attendees with a knife before fleeing on foot.<\/p>\n
He remains at large.<\/p>\n
Berlin police said investigators believe the suspect has links to Islamist circles in the German capital.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the investigators\u2019 initial findings, we have already identified a suspected perpetrator,\u201d Berlin police spokesman Florian Nath said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is known to us as a member of Islamist circles here in Berlin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully in the German capital for the annual Christopher Street Day celebrations before the attack brought the festivities to an abrupt end.<\/p>\n
Police have urged people to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
The annual Pride event, known as Christopher Street Day, has since been cancelled.<\/p>\n
Mr Nath said in a video posted on X: \u201cWe are now at the scene with a significant police presence, alongside paramedics from the Berlin fire service and other emergency organisations.<\/p>\n

\u201cA vehicle allegedly drove into the park and struck several people, apparently causing a number of injuries.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeveral casualties are now being treated by the Berlin fire service in the Tiergarten area.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: “We are searching for possible suspects and will update when we have more information.”<\/p>\n
Earlier today, huge crowds took part in a parade throughout the city.<\/p>\n

Around one million people usually attend Berlin\u2019s Christopher Street Day celebrations.<\/p>\n
German newspaper Bild cited a witness as saying a white van ploughed into the crowd at high speed before a man got out and fled on foot.<\/p>\n
