Amsterdam will introduce additional security measures for the WorldPride celebrations currently taking place in the Dutch capital in response to the attack in Berlin, Mayor Femke Halsema said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Halsema said that security would be increased wherever considered necessary, according to the ANP news agency.<\/p>\n
The report said police, prosecutors and the city administration were working closely together but did not provide further details.<\/p>\n
WorldPride is regarded as one of the largest international events for the LGBTIQ+ community. This year marks the first time the festival has been held in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
The multi-day celebrations officially opened on Saturday in the presence of Queen M\u00e1xima, with no security incidents reported.<\/p>\n
The festival’s highlight is expected to be the Canal Parade next Saturday, when decorated boats will travel through the city’s canals. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the events.<\/p>\n
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten described the Berlin attack as “a horrific act of violence” and expressed his country’s solidarity with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n
“In difficult times, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our German neighbours,” he said.<\/p>\n
In the northern German city of Hamburg, Interior Senator Andy Grote has announced that security arrangements for next week’s Pride parade “will be carefully reviewed once again to ensure the highest possible level of safety.”<\/p>\n
Grote described the incident as “a horrific act of violence.”<\/p>\n
“To attack a celebration of love, solidarity, and freedom is an attack on our open society – and therefore on all of us,” he said. “But we will not back down.”<\/p>\n
The Berlin Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade was called off on Saturday evening after a van drove into a crowd near the event in the Tiergarten park.
