Its wreck near Karaikal shortly after arrival makes it a valuable archaeological resource for understanding early maritime ties between Denmark and India, and the wider story of seafaring and trade across the Indian Ocean in the early seventeenth century.

Shared maritime history

Shri Yadubir Singh Rawat, Director General, Archaeological Survey of India(ASI), noted that the ASI remains committed to advancing scientific research, conservation, and international cooperation in cultural heritage, and described the MoU with the National Museum of Denmark as an important step toward strengthening academic and institutional ties between the two countries. He said the proposed investigation of the Øresund, which “occupies a unique place in the shared maritime history of India and Denmark,” would meaningfully add to the understanding of maritime interaction and trade networks in the Indian Ocean. Drawing on advanced non-invasive technologies and scientific methodologies, he added, the collaboration would “further enrich knowledge of our shared heritage while promoting the protection and documentation of underwater cultural resources in accordance with international best practices.”

H.E. Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, Denmark’s Ambassador to India, described the Øresund as “an important chapter in the shared history of Denmark and India,” reflecting centuries of maritime exchange and people-to-people connections. He noted that the collaboration between the National Museum of Denmark and the Archaeological Survey of India shows how international partnerships can help uncover, document, and preserve common heritage through scientific excellence and mutual trust, adding that he was pleased Denmark and India were “joining hands on this pioneering initiative,” which would deepen the understanding of the past while strengthening cultural, academic, and research ties between the two nations.

Advanced survey technologies

The investigations will be carried out by the Underwater Archaeology Wing of the Archaeological Survey of India in collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark. Under the MoU, the project will focus on a non-invasive archaeological survey using advanced technologies and scientific methods to identify potential remains of the shipwreck.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the Underwater Archaeology Wing, as its first joint archaeological project with an international organization. The partnership is expected to strengthen academic and scientific cooperation between India and Denmark in underwater cultural heritage research, and reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to documenting, protecting, and studying underwater cultural heritage through international cooperation and non-invasive scientific methodologies.

With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), India and Denmark have launched a joint underwater archaeological project to locate and document the remains of the historic Danish ship Øresund off the Indian coast.

The Archaeological Survey of India and the National Museum of Denmark’s Njord – Centre for Maritime and Underwater…

[2
65830,5469,6611,4368,27,26,1193,55135,65832,65831,65833
post-135994","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-denmark","tag-archaeological-survey","tag-archaeology","tag-collaboration","tag-cultural-heritage","tag-danmark","tag-denmark","tag-history","tag-maritime-heritage","tag-shipwreck-survey","tag-survey-of-india","tag-wreck-surveying
["GET
