{"id":136268,"date":"2026-07-28T04:00:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T04:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/136268\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T04:00:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T04:00:17","slug":"interview-french-palestinian-mep-rima-hassan-nobody-believes-in-the-two-state-solution-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/136268\/","title":{"rendered":"[Interview] French-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan: \u2018Nobody believes in the two-state solution\u2019 \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t understand how you can be involved in politics if you\u2019re not an activist.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born to Palestinian asylum seekers in a refugee camp in northern Syria, French MEP Rima Hassan has been preparing for the political arena her whole life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn politics, everything is driven by activism, by convictions. Otherwise it\u2019s just administrative work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even before her term as member of the European Parliament for the Left party started in 2024, she took to the streets among pro-Palestine and pro-democracy rallies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, she was captured and arrested by Israeli armed forces for attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/217981\/eu-appalled-again-by-israel-this-time-over-ben-gvirs-gaza-flotilla-humiliation-but-continues-doing-nothing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/217981\/eu-appalled-again-by-israel-this-time-over-ben-gvirs-gaza-flotilla-humiliation-but-continues-doing-nothing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deliver aid to Gaza on the Global Sumund Flotilla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since her election under the French leftwing political group La France Insoumise [France Unbowed], \u201cin just two years, I\u2019ve already faced 22 legal proceedings,\u201d she said, while preparation for her latest court excursion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 7 July, the 34-year old MEP was expected to face a charge for \u201cglorifying terrorism\u201d, since she reposted a quote from the author of a mass-shooting in an Israeli airport in 1972, Japanese militant K\u014dz\u014d Okamoto, in March 2026. The trial has been postponed until October.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/226107\/the-eu-poured-millions-into-gaza-and-looks-away-when-its-turned-to-rubble\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/947d5e6564343085a1ed1ecefe917448-600x400.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quote she had posted was: \u201cAs long as there is oppression, resistance will not only be a right, but a duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe report filed regarding the tweet didn\u2019t come from just anyone; it came from the state,\u201d she said. \u201cSo it\u2019s political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although La France Insoumise party and Hassan herself have deemed this an attack on pro-Palestinian voices, this event has encapsulated how much of a target she is in her own workplace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s what immunity is there for. It\u2019s there to protect MEPs\u2019 freedom of expression,\u201d she said. \u201cThis has never happened to any European deputy before \u2013 being caught in the act for a tweet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hassan worried this could set a precedent in undermining the immunity of MEPs, or in applying <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/103858\/dutch-government-preparing-uk-style-anti-glorification-of-terrorism-law\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/103858\/dutch-government-preparing-uk-style-anti-glorification-of-terrorism-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anti-terrorism laws for pro-Palestine and progressive struggles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There\u2019s a widespread phenomenon of repression that targets people who denounce the European Union\u2019s complicity, and the complicity of our member states, in the genocide that is currently taking place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of her allegiances, Hassan has faced harassment in the course of her work, on the internet, on the street, all the way up to the corridors of the parliament in Brussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MEP has been called a spokesperson for Hamas and an anti-semite, with threats frequently materialising in legal accusations, media disinformation campaigns, and heavy surveillance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/221647\/eu-leaders-pretend-they-need-unanimity-to-ban-israeli-settlement-products-they-dont\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/8157180138_fbbb412488_o-600x400.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That hasn\u2019t stopped Hassan from working on issues dear to her cause, from the committee on foreign affairs, to human rights and relations with Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>Locked in &#8216;a two-state problem&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m now coordinating a working group within La France Insoumise that brings together dozens of researchers to move beyond the two-state paradigm.\u201d From September, Hassan and her colleagues will be aiming to produce alternatives to the current <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oslo_Accords\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oslo accords<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn reality, there is only one state,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a status quo, it\u2019s not a two-state solution; it\u2019s a two-state problem.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody believes in the two-state solution. That\u2019s the reality,\u201d she said, on the topic of the \u201cpolitical cowardice\u201d she senses in the diplomacy of her peers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she\u2019s spoken to off the record by European diplomats advocating the official line of EU foreign policy, she says, their conviction on a two-state solution suddenly falters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the death toll in the Palestinian territories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/resources\/reports\/unrwa-situation-report-229-humanitarian-crisis-gaza-strip-and-occupied-west-bank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/resources\/reports\/unrwa-situation-report-229-humanitarian-crisis-gaza-strip-and-occupied-west-bank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mounting<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/data\/casualties\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/data\/casualties\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">above<\/a> 74,000 since 7 October 2023, demanding nothing more than Brussels\u2019 status quo \u201cis not merely a lack of courage; it is a criminal policy to advocate for a two-state solution today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her work has invited consistent confrontation, with questioning of her allegiances and neutrality because of what her background represents &#8211; but the truth is: \u201cI don\u2019t work in the interests of the Palestinian state.
