One person has died and at least another 16 people are injured after a van slammed into a crowd gathering for Berlin’s Christopher Street Day pride parade.<\/p>\n

Police said some of the victims had life-threatening injuries from the attack on Saturday night local time.<\/p>\n

German authorities on Sunday issued a wanted notice for a fugitive suspect in the van ramming.<\/p>\n

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the incident as \u201can attack on our society”.<\/p>\n

Police and prosecutors asked for help in finding the suspect, who they identified as 21-year-old Abdul B.<\/p>\n

They said he was believed to have injured several people with a moving vehicle, and that one or more people apparently then left that vehicle. Several people were also apparently stabbed, they added.<\/p>\n

The wanted notice warned the public to avoid “direct contact” with the suspect, saying that he may be armed and dangerous.<\/p>\n

Police said earlier that they had identified a suspect who had ties to Islamic groups in the German capital.<\/p>\n

“The suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed,” police spokesperson Florian Nath said.<\/p>\n

“We still have no information whatsoever regarding his specific motives, the exact sequence of events, or his role in the crime itself.”<\/p>\n

White van hits people in Tiergarten Park<\/p>\n

According to police, a white van had driven into Tiergarten Park about 10pm local time, which is next to the route the pride march had passed along earlier, and hit several people before colliding with a tree.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police could not say how many officers were deployed to the scene, but it was “definitely a lot of police”.<\/p>\n

More than 2,200 police officers have been on duty in Berlin since Saturday morning to protect the pride parade and other LGBTQ+ events in the city.<\/p>\n

Police were conducting witness interrogations at the park during the night and were investigating allegations that crash some victims appeared to have suffered stab wounds.<\/p>\n

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner expressed shock, saying that “following a peaceful and vibrant pride parade, the rally for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner”.<\/p>\n

“This is an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I have confidence in the police and security authorities, who will be working around the clock to investigate.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, authorities called on possible witnesses to come forward and share with police any video or photos they might have taken at the scene of the attack.<\/p>\n

The city also activated a crisis hotline for people missing friends or family members.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of people had come to Berlin to celebrate at Berlin’s pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations.<\/p>\n

Iconic pride event called off<\/p>\n

The pride event in front of the city’s Brandenburg Gate, near Tiergarten, was called off about 10:15 pm local time and a band’s performance on stage was interrupted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

People were urged to go home and to avoid taking the route through the park.<\/p>\n

Before the incident, people had celebrated peacefully, marching through the city for hours, dancing to loud music, and cheering about 80 floats that participated in the parade.<\/p>\n

Julian Miethig, who had attended the LGBTQ+ party at the Brandenburg Gate earlier, said he had just wanted to go to an afterparty when he heard from a friend that “something bad happened there and there are a lot of fire trucks, a lot of emergency vehicles, ambulances”.<\/p>\n

He said he went to Tiergarten and was shocked that something like this could have happened at Berlin’s pride celebrations.<\/p>\n

“It’s a dark day for the community,” he said.<\/p>\n
