{"id":13718,"date":"2026-02-15T08:58:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T08:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/13718\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T08:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T08:58:17","slug":"winter-olympics-2026-hockey-fans-display-greenland-flag-during-usa-win-over-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/13718\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Olympics 2026 hockey fans display Greenland flag during USA win over Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/14\/sports\/brady-tkachuk-helps-usa-mens-hockey-survive-denmark-scare\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Team USA\u2019s comeback men\u2019s hockey win<\/a> over Denmark at the Winter Olympics, two fans raised the flag of Greenland in the stands to protest President Donald Trump\u2019s intent to\u00a0acquire Greenland\u00a0for the US.<\/p>\n<p>The flag was raised enthusiastically after Denmark took an early lead. <\/p>\n<p>However, the US came back to\u00a0win the game\u00a06-3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vita Kalni\u0146a and her husband Alexander Kalni\u0146\u0161, fans of the Latvian hockey team who live in Germany, held up a large Greenland flag during warmups and again when the Danish team scored the opening goal of the preliminary round game against the US, which ultimately beat Denmark 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are Europeans, and I think as Europeans we must hold together,\u201d Kalni\u0146\u0161 told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Greenlandic people decide what will happen with Greenland, but, as it is now, Greenland is a part of the Danish kingdom and, as Greenland is a part of Denmark, as in this case, we support both countries against the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Danish fan at the game, Dennis Petersen, said, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whatever sport it is \u2014 it could be tennis, it could be bobsledding, it can be ice hockey, it could be football \u2014 it has nothing to do with politics. \u2026 They are athletes, not politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hockey fans hold up a Greenland national flag during the USA-Denmark hockey match in Milan, Italy, on Feb. 14, 2026. Geoff Burke-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>An American fan at the game, Rem de Rohan, said, \u201cI think this is the time for people to kind of put that down and compete country versus country and enjoy,\u201d he said. \u201cWe love rooting on every country that\u2019s been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans on social media had their own reactions to the flag display and the result of the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that the USA is up 4-2 could we place a wager that if the USA wins the game, Denmark gives up Greenland?\u201d one fan wrote in response to the flag.<\/p>\n<p>One fan wrote, \u201cTeam USA won, do we get Greenland now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock Faber and Jeremy Swaymen attempt to block a shot by Denmark. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Another fan similarly said, \u201cHow did that turn out? we won, we get greenland now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some American conservative influencers used the US victory as a springboard to make viral jokes about annexing Greenland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The comeback victory by the US appeared uncertain early in the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After trailing 2-1 through the first period, the Americans dominated on offense to take a 6-3 victory over Denmark Saturday in the\u00a0Milan Cortina Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans scored three unanswered goals to open the second period, with 4 Nations hero Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators), Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights) and Noah Hanifin (Vegas Golden Knights) finding the back of the net.<\/p>\n<p>A young fan celebrates in front of a flag of Greenland during the match. Geoff Burke-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Both sets of brothers on the team \u2014 Brady and Matthew Tkachuk and Jack and Quinn Hughes \u2014 each had a point in the contest. Fourteen players had points for the Americans with a different goal scorer each time the lamp was lit.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans had 47 shots on goal compared to Denmark\u2019s 21.<\/p>\n<p>The US ends preliminary play Sunday with a\u00a0game against Germany\u00a0at 3:10 p.m. ET. The Americans will once again be heavy favorites, and a victory will put them into the knockout stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans can also go right to the knockout stage with an overtime loss.
