Private investors would acquire a stake in that business while FIFA would continue to oversee the sport’s governing functions.

Gianni Infantino wrote to all 211 FIFA member associations offering payments of up to $40 million for each association if they supported the proposal. The letter offered an initial payment of $20 million before a 19 September deadline, with a further $20 million expected later if the plan proceeds.

UEFA’s boycott would extend to every FIFA competition, including the men’s World Cup, women’s World Cup and Club World Cup. The first event affected would be the Women’s World Cup play-offs scheduled for October if the dispute remains unresolved.

Infantino defended the proposal on Wednesday after criticism spread across world football.

In a video message, he described the proposal as “an offer” and “part of a democratic process”.

“It is a golden opportunity to turbocharge the development of the game globally,” he said.

FIFA argues that private investment would generate around $10 billion for football and increase funding for national associations across the world.

The proposal has drawn criticism beyond Europe.

Concacaf, the confederation covering North America, Central America and the Caribbean, said it learned about the proposal through media reports rather than through FIFA’s governance structures.

In its statement, Concacaf said it was “deeply concerned by the lack of due process.”

The confederation added that decisions of such importance should follow consultation with governing bodies and stakeholders before entering the public domain.

The Asian Football Confederation also criticised the process.

It said it had not been consulted and that proposals with long-term financial consequences should be based on transparency and meaningful engagement with confederations and member associations.

UEFA’s latest statement also attacked the process behind the proposal.

It said football’s governing institutions were custodians of the game rather than owners and had no right to transfer ownership of competitions built over generations.

“The World Cup belongs to football. It always will,” the statement said.

The governing body added that Europe would oppose the proposal “with absolute determination.”

HT

European football entered one of its biggest governance disputes after UEFA and its 55 member associations voted to…

[87
66640,9165,66643,158,1750,6793,23570,113,66641,9177,66644,10778,66642
post-137838","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-helsinki","tag-aleksander-ceferin","tag-fifa","tag-fifa-competitions","tag-finland","tag-football","tag-football-news","tag-gianni-infantino","tag-helsinki","tag-private-investment","tag-uefa","tag-uefa-statement","tag-world-cup","tag-world-cup-boycott
["GET
