{"id":13791,"date":"2026-02-15T10:28:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T10:28:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/13791\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T10:28:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T10:28:28","slug":"fans-show-support-for-greenland-at-winter-olympics-hockey-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/13791\/","title":{"rendered":"Fans Show Support for Greenland at Winter Olympics Hockey Match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Latvian hockey fans raised a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-greenland-rare-earth-minerals-compare-world-11320396\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland<\/a> flag during the United States versus Denmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/how-to-watch-sweden-vs-slovakia-live-stream-mens-hockey-winter-olympics-tv-channel-11523002\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">men&#8217;s hockey game<\/a> Saturday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/winter-olympics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winter Olympics in Milan<\/a>, describing their gesture as a symbol of European support for the Arctic island amid ongoing tensions over U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s rhetoric about taking control of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Vita Kalni\u0146a and her husband, Alexander Kalni\u0146\u0161\u2014fans of the Latvian hockey team who live in Germany\u2014held up a large red and white Greenland flag during warmups and again when Denmark scored the opening goal of the preliminary round game. <\/p>\n<p>European Unity Message<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;For us as Europeans it was important to show up (with) this symbol as a symbol of a European unity that we support Greenland,&#8221; Kalni\u0146\u0161 told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/republican-donald-trump-greenland-poll-11520887\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump&#8217;s recent statements about taking control of Greenland<\/a> have stirred national pride in Denmark, which oversees the semiautonomous island, as well as support from across the European continent.<\/p>\n<p>Security Concerns Lead to Flag Removal<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Inside the hockey arena Saturday, Kalni\u0146a and Kalni\u0146\u0161 say venue staff told them they could not continue displaying the flag, even as American flags were waved throughout the stands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;He said it was due to safety reasons, because there could be American aggressive people,&#8221; Kalni\u0146\u0161 told AP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The couple complied because they wanted to watch the game. (AP Photo\/Petr David Josek)\" credit=\"\" sourcealt=\"\" sources=\"[]\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3613\" height=\"2408\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;aspect-ratio:inherit;object-fit:cover\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AP26045790756430.jpg\"\/>Unclear Flag Policy at Games<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The Greenland flag&#8217;s status at the Games is unclear because Greenland doesn&#8217;t participate with its own team. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Greenlandic athletes, such as biathlete siblings Ukaleq and Sondre Slettemark, compete as part of Denmark&#8217;s team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">A guide on the official Olympic website for the opening ceremony specified that fans can only bring &#8220;flags of countries and territories participating in the Games.&#8221; Greenland is a self-governing territory of the kingdom of Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Support for Greenland&#8217;s Future<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Kalni\u0146a and Kalni\u0146\u0161 said they want Greenlanders to know that Europe supports the Arctic island whether it stays part of Denmark or ultimately chooses full independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not OK that Trump and America are this aggressive and try to incorporate the island into their country,&#8221; Kalni\u0146\u0161 said.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes Keep Politics Off the Ice<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Danish athletes playing in the so-called &#8220;Greenland Derby&#8221; said politics never made it to the ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">As for the strained relationship between the U.S. and Denmark, &#8220;we didn&#8217;t even mention it&#8221; within the team, captain Jesper Jensen Aabo said. &#8220;We just wanted to win a hockey game against a world-class team. We didn&#8217;t need extra fire to fire us up. We were ready for the game even though there&#8217;s stuff going around in the real world, so that&#8217;s nothing that affected us at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The captain said the players did not notice the Greenland flag in the stands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t see it, but that was nice,&#8221; Jensen Aabo said. &#8220;So hopefully they supported us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11526202\" alt=\"\" caption=\"Fans hold Greenland national flag before a preliminary round match of men's ice hockey between United States and Denmark at the 2026 Winter Olympics, in Milan, Italy, Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026.
