{"id":138368,"date":"2026-07-31T15:54:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T15:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/138368\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T15:54:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T15:54:06","slug":"some-37500-migrants-return-to-morocco-after-thousands-cross-border-into-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/138368\/","title":{"rendered":"Some 37,500 migrants return to Morocco after thousands cross border into Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/spain\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spain<\/a> said on Friday that it had reversed a huge rush of <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/migrants\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">migrants<\/a> into a Spanish enclave in North <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/africa\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Africa<\/a>, with thousands of people who had crossed the border by land and sea already heading back voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>Moroccan forces beat back crowds with batons and tear gas at the gates to Ceuta,\u00a0trying to prevent more from storming across into the tiny Spanish territory \u200bthat juts on a spit \u200cof sandy land into the Mediterranean from <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/morocco\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Morocco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s Interior Ministry said around 60,000 people had crossed the border since Thursday morning, and estimated that around 37,500 had already turned \u2060and gone back.<\/p>\n<p>EU chief <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> on social media, called the scenes at Ceuta &#8220;unacceptable&#8221;, adding: &#8220;We cannot allow anyone to come to our (European) Union without abiding by our rules.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Italy on Thursday called for Spain to be suspended from Europe&#8217;s open-borders Schengen zone, prompting Spain to summon Italy&#8217;s ambassador and accuse Rome of using the crisis for political gain.<\/p>\n<p>Finland and Denmark on Friday backed Italy&#8217;s call, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz demanded that Morocco &#8220;take back illegal migrants immediately&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s prime minister also said the EU should consider suspending Spain from the Schengen free movement area after thousands of migrants poured into its north African enclave of Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It goes without saying that the EU must immediately take all necessary measures and consider all options, including a suspension of Schengen cooperation.
