My boyfriend lives here, which means I’ve had the rare opportunity to experience Copenhagen beyond the typical long weekend itinerary. I’ve settled into routines that make the city feel familiar, from stopping by Netto for groceries to grabbing what I still maintain is the best cinnamon roll I’ve ever had from Lagkagehuset. I’ve spent warm afternoons swimming at Ofelia Plads and Nordhavn, wandered through neighborhoods that rarely make first-time visitor guides, and discovered that some of the city’s best moments happen when there’s no plan at all.

So when the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2026 Global Liveability Index named Copenhagen the world’s most livable city, overtaking Vienna and edging out Melbourne, my reaction wasn’t surprise.

It was, “Yeah, that sounds about right.”

The word livable doesn’t exactly scream vacation. But maybe it should. Because what makes a city wonderful to live in often makes it an even better place to visit.

The luxury here doesn’t feel flashy

 Amanda Teague / The Manual

Copenhagen isn’t a city that tries to impress you. There are no towering skylines competing for attention or endless rows of designer boutiques trying to outdo one another. Luxury here is quieter.

It’s checking into a beautiful hotel where the design feels effortless instead of extravagant. It’s spending three hours over dinner because nobody expects you to rush. It’s walking along the harbor at 10 p.m. in June while the sky is still glowing blue.

Some of my favorite moments in Copenhagen haven’t involved reservations or itineraries at all. They’ve been simple evenings wandering through Nyhavn after the crowds have thinned or biking home through streets where almost everyone else is doing exactly the same thing.

That’s a kind of luxury money can’t really manufacture.

The city is designed for people, not cars

 Amanda Teague / The Manual

One of the biggest adjustments whenever I arrive from the U.S. is remembering just how little I need a car.

My boyfriend is very much a local in that he’ll bike almost everywhere, and it’s easy to understand why. Copenhagen’s cycling infrastructure is incredible. Personally, I love walking. The city is compact enough that you really can get almost anywhere on foot if you don’t mind taking your time.

Some of my favorite afternoons have started in København K, where my boyfriend lives, and ended in Nordhavn after a long walk with a coffee stop somewhere in between. Other days we’ll head to Reffen in the summer, spending hours eating street food by the water before wandering back into the city.

Instead of budgeting for rideshares or figuring out where to park, I spend my time discovering neighborhoods I probably never would have explored otherwise.

The city encourages you to slow down.

Ironically, that usually means I end up seeing more.

Everyday life feels surprisingly luxurious

 Amanda Teague / The Manual

One thing I’ve come to appreciate is how many everyday experiences feel elevated without trying very hard.

The coffee is excellent almost everywhere. Public transportation is clean enough that it still catches me off guard. The bakeries are stocked with fresh bread that somehow makes my supermarket loaf back home seem a little depressing. Even something as ordinary as biking to dinner along the harbor starts to feel special after a while.

None of those experiences are individually remarkable.

Together, they’re what make Copenhagen so enjoyable to return to again and again.

People here work to live

 Amanda Teague / The Manual

One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed between Denmark and the U.S. has nothing to do with architecture or food.

It’s the pace.

There’s a saying that Europeans work to live while Americans live to work, and nowhere have I felt that more than Copenhagen.

Summer evenings are a perfect example.

Instead of rushing home after work, people gather along the harbor with friends. Some bring a bottle of wine. Others jump into the water before heading home. Restaurants stay lively for hours because nobody seems particularly interested in hurrying through dinner.

There’s an ease to everyday life that can be difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it yourself.

Summer feels like one long celebration

 Daniel Rasmussen / Wonderful Copenhagen

I’ve visited Copenhagen throughout the year, but summer is something entirely different.

The harbor fills with swimmers.
