When Denmark voted on June 1, 2022, to\u00a0abolish its EU defense opt-out<\/a>, it wasn\u2019t just a technical adjustment to Brussels paperwork.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was a decision, made at the ballot box in the shadow of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, that Denmark could no longer afford to sit outside Europe\u2019s defense architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Four years later, that choice has produced one of the more consequential defense partnerships in Danish foreign policy: a deepening alignment with France.<\/p>\n

A Partnership Sealed at the Highest Level<\/p>\n

The Franco-Danish relationship has developed over the long term, and letter of intent between the two countries\u2019 defense ministers in 2014 set the direction long before Ukraine made it urgent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it took King Frederik X\u2019s state visit to Paris in April 2025 to turn quiet cooperation into a formal strategic partnership, one covering not just defense, but health, energy transition, and culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That a reigning Danish monarch\u2019s visit produced a defense pact is itself a signal of how seriously Copenhagen now treats the alliance.<\/p>\n

On procurement, Copenhagen backed that partnership with a concrete decision:\u00a0choosing the Franco-Italian SAMP\/T-NG air defense system<\/a>, paired with an agreement to acquire French\u00a0Mistral surface-to-air missiles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reciprocal Solidarity, Tested in Greenland<\/p>\n

As\u00a0American pressure over Greenland<\/a>\u00a0intensified, Denmark didn\u2019t wait for reassurance, it invited it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Copenhagen convened the \u201cArctic Endurance\u201d\u00a0exercise<\/a>\u00a0in January 2026, bringing France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden into a joint deployment that put French Alpine troops on the ground in Nuuk alongside their European counterparts.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a small detachment in military terms. But symbolically, it\u2019s Denmark demonstrating that when Washington applies pressure over Greenlandic sovereignty, Copenhagen has European allies willing to show up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

France was one participant among several, not a lone guarantor, but its presence in the Arctic underlines that the Franco-Danish relationship isn\u2019t confined to Paris and Copenhagen; it extends to the territory Denmark cares about most right now.<\/p>\n

The solidarity runs both ways. Denmark brings real assets to the table too: a maritime and space-technology industrial base that complements French capabilities, and a long record of backing French forces in the Sahel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Frigate Contract: The Next Real Test<\/p>\n

Words and joint exercises are one thing. What happens next is the harder test, and it\u2019s playing out in Danish shipyards and procurement offices right now.<\/p>\n

French shipbuilder Naval Group is bidding for one of the largest defense contracts in Danish history: a frigate program worth roughly one billion euros, pitting the\u00a0French FDI design<\/a>\u00a0against strong competition from South Korea.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a symbolic contest. It will decide who builds part of Denmark\u2019s future naval capability, what industrial cooperation and technology transfer Danish shipbuilders get out of the deal, and whether the partnership sealed in Paris in 2025 translates into decades of shared capability or stays a diplomatic gesture.<\/p>\n

The Bigger Picture<\/p>\n

Since 2022, Denmark has moved from EU defense outsider to one of France\u2019s more active European partners through joint procurement, Arctic solidarity, and now a major industrial competition that will test whether the relationship has staying power.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It now rests on concrete commitments rather than mere declarations of intent \u2014 a foundation that, beyond short-term contingencies, outlines the contours of a lasting strategic partnership between the two countries.<\/p>\n
