Turkish authorities detained 12 journalists in July, two of whom were subsequently arrested, as pressure on the media continued with legal proceedings, restrictions on news coverage and digital censorship, according to a monthly report<\/a> released by the Dicle F\u0131rat Journalists Association (DFG).<\/p>\n

Authorities cited news reports, social media posts and participation in past demonstrations as grounds for the detentions, the DFG said. Among those detained were Deutsche Welle Turkish Service reporter Alican Uluda\u011f<\/a>, T24 foreign news editor Buse S\u00f6\u011f\u00fctl\u00fc, Odatv editor Ceren Erdo\u011fdu<\/a> and reporter Fermandar Karde\u015f<\/a> for the pro-Kurdish Ber\u00fb news agency.<\/p>\n

Two of the journalists detained, Fatma Sibel G\u00fcrcihan<\/a> and Cem K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck, were subsequently jailed pending trial.<\/p>\n

A total of 33 journalists stood trial in 14 cases in July. Many of the proceedings were adjourned to later dates, while judicial supervision measures remained in place.<\/p>\n

The report highlighted the detention of several journalists in operations<\/a> ahead of a NATO summit in Ankara. Police also obstructed reporters covering a protest against the summit in Ankara\u2019s Kurtulu\u015f Park on July 7, using shields to prevent filming and removing reporters from the area.<\/p>\n

Journalist Hazar Dost<\/a>, who was detained during the pre-summit operations, said police verbally abused him in a police vehicle, denied him access to a restroom and his regular medication at the police station and subjected to physical violence during his transfer to the courthouse.<\/p>\n

BirG\u00fcn reporter Ebru \u00c7elik<\/a> was threatened and placed under investigation over a report alleging that extras had been brought to a badge-pinning ceremony held by the main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP). BirG\u00fcn web coordinator U\u011fur Ko\u00e7 and journalist Berkant G\u00fcltekin were summoned for questioning in the same investigation, while journalists Fatih Altayl\u0131 and Timur Soykan also gave statements.<\/p>\n

The report documented access restrictions targeting 20 pieces of online content, two news reports and several news websites as well as 11 publication bans.<\/p>\n

Pro-Kurdish news websites N\u00fbmedya24, Azad\u00eeya Welat, Ajansa Welat and Nupel Haber were among those blocked, while the X accounts of Ajansa Welat and N\u00fbmedya24 were withheld in Turkey. Jinnews\u2019s account was blocked for the seventh time.<\/p>\n

Journalists Diren Yurtsever, \u00d6znur De\u011fer, Alican Uluda\u011f<\/a> and G\u00fclistan G\u00fclmi\u015f were among those whose personal X accounts were targeted by access restrictions.<\/p>\n

The DFG said 27 journalists were behind bars in Turkey as of August 4.<\/p>\n
