The loan carries a long tenor, consistent with the bank’s standards for financing energy infrastructure, and adds to a series of similar transactions the NIB has carried out in recent years with other Danish biogas operators. These financings come as gas supply security remains a sensitive issue in Europe, as illustrated by tensions surrounding the Khor Mor gas deliveries disputed by Iraqi Kurdistan or the planned opening of the Krk terminal to the Balkan gas market. This new agreement confirms the NIB’s appetite for Denmark’s biomethane sector.

Doubling biomethane output

The plant converts agricultural residues and industrial organic waste into biomethane and liquid carbon dioxide. The expansion financed by the NIB aims to raise annual renewable gas output to a level twice the current one, while increasing the amount of waste the facility can process each year. The project also envisages the possible installation of biogenic carbon dioxide capture technology.

According to the stated intentions, this captured CO2 could be directed either toward permanent geological storage or supplied to projects converting electricity into fuels or chemicals, a pathway known as Power-to-X. This option sets Sindal Biogas apart from smaller biogas plants, whose activity is generally limited to injecting biomethane into the gas grid.

Governance reshaped since 2024

On the ownership side, the plant has been majority-owned since 2024 by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I, whose investments are overseen by Thomas Dalsgaard, a partner at CIP. Two longer-standing co-shareholders remain on the cap table: KK Invest — led by Karen Kirketerp and tied to the family-owned agricultural group K/Agro (Kirketerp Agro) — and DBC Invest, the investment arm of Danish Bio Commodities. Jesper Horne serves as chief executive of Sindal Biogas A/S.

The entry of an institutional infrastructure fund marked a shift from the plant’s original ownership structure, which was more closely tied to the local agricultural community. More recent information suggests the stake held by the historical agricultural co-shareholder has shrunk further since, in favor of the infrastructure fund, although the two disclosures do not necessarily rely on the same method for calculating percentages.

Persistent financial losses

This refinancing and expansion move comes as the operator navigates a difficult financial period. In its most recent fiscal year, the plant recorded a significant net loss, continuing a trend already observed the previous year. Sindal Biogas’s own management publicly acknowledges the severity of the situation.

Denmark’s broader biogas sector has faced comparable difficulties in recent years. Observers jointly point to weak gas prices, the collapse of the green certificates market and rising biomass feedstock costs as explanatory factors, without this calling into question, for now, the continued investment by institutional shareholders. The financing also fits within Denmark’s national policy of gradually converting its gas grid to fully renewable gas, an objective cited by André Küüsvek, president and chief executive of the NIB, as a rationale for the loan, alongside an energy security argument tied to reduced dependence on gas imports.

The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB), an international financial institution owned by eight Nordic and Baltic countries, has signed…

[2
27,26,918,68135
post-142162","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-denmark","tag-danmark","tag-denmark","tag-gas","tag-sindal-biogas-biomethane-expansion
["GET
