Then I was on this Zoom with James Wan and with Thomas Brandon, who wrote and created the show.”

Wan and Brandon wanted Liu to play Alexander Hale, a first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst whose brain is secretly hacked by unknown enemies.

Alexander was stuck at a desk job at The Orphanage, the top-secret spy agency where he works. But after discovering an unknown entity has tapped into his brain and is listening and seeing his every move, he becomes a spy in a race to prove he hasn’t committed treason, while also trying to hunt down those responsible for infiltrating his brain.

With leading roles for Asian actors in the spy genre far and few, 36-year-old Liu jumped at the chance to play Alexander – a role that really resonated with the China-born actor, who appreciated that his real-life cultural identity was written into his character.

“I was just really blown away by the pitch, by the world of The Orphanage, by the technology of the hack and also, and probably most importantly, by Alexander’s character arc,” he tells us.

“The fact that he is a first generation immigrant who is an intelligence operative and is fighting desperately to prove his loyalty, his worthiness, his belonging … I think there were all things that, to some degree, I think I related to [and] struggled with in my experience growing up Asian in Canada.”

Perfectly cast beside him in the espionage thriller is Melissa Barrera, who plays a fellow intelligence operative Michelle that poses as Alexander’s fake girlfriend.

Codenamed Shadowboxer, Michelle is assigned to monitor Alexander after his eyes and ears are compromised.

Speaking to news.com.au, 35-year-old Barrera – known for her roles in Scream V and Scream VI – says she actually wanted to be a spy when she was younger and even emailed the CIA as a child to ask them for some tips on how to become one. So this role somewhat allowed her to fulfil that childhood dream.

“I was obsessed with spy shows and I thought that I wanted that life,” she tells us. “I didn’t know at the time that what I actually wanted was to be an actor and act as a spy, but I think I manifested it from back then.”

“I always wanted to play a spy. I was obsessed with Alias. And so when this opportunity came around [and] I got the first two scripts, I loved it. I thought they were so well written and it was such a cool technological twist to the spy story. And I thought working with Simu Liu… Yes, sign me up.”

The Copenhagen Test will be available to stream February 16 on BINGE, with all episodes dropping at once.

The Copenhagen Test will also be available On Demand with episodes premiering on Showcase.

Read related topics:BingeFoxtel

Simu Liu has had a busy few years.
