In a historic first for Denmark\u2019s monarchy, Princess Isabella has begun her 11-month military service, becoming the first woman from the royal family to undergo full conscription.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old reported for duty at Antvorskov Barracks in Slagelse on August 3. The eldest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary joined the Guard Hussar Regiment weeks after finishing high school, reported nine.com.au.<\/p>\n

Isabella kept a low profile on her first day. She drove herself to the barracks in a black SUV and walked in without ceremony.<\/p>\n

Dressed in baggy jeans and a suede jacket, she carried a large backpack and a small purse. She showed her ID to the guard at the entrance and briefly acknowledged photographers before heading inside.<\/p>\n

Following Royal Tradition<\/p>\n

Isabella follows her older brother, Crown Prince Christian, who completed his military service at the same barracks. He is now training as a second lieutenant.<\/p>\n

Members of Denmark\u2019s royal family have long served in the armed forces. However, Isabella is the first woman to take part in active military conscription under the country\u2019s expanded programme.<\/p>\n

Unlike other recruits, Isabella has chosen not to take the salary or daily allowance given to conscripts. The Danish royal family said she declined the payments and will rely on support from her parents during her service.<\/p>\n

Conscripts in Denmark usually receive a monthly salary along with a tax-free daily allowance during the 11-month term.<\/p>\n

Denmark Expands Military Service<\/p>\n

Isabella\u2019s enlistment comes as Denmark strengthens its military amid rising security concerns in Europe, including the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Arctic. The country made military service mandatory for women in 2024 and extended the duration from four months to 11 months.<\/p>\n

Around 1,600 recruits began the extended service this week. Some are expected to be deployed to Greenland later this month to support operational duties.<\/p>\n

Denmark faces a tense moment as war in Ukraine has brought a major conflict back to Europe for the first time since World War II. At the same time, US President Donald Trump\u2019s remarks about taking control of Greenland, a Danish territory, have added to security concerns and diplomatic strain.<\/p>\n
