Effort to Propel Faster Drug Development Expands an Existing Relationship<\/p>\n

As part of its ongoing mission to accelerate drug development with help from artificial intelligence, Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk is expanding a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services with the two companies launching a new AI “co-innovation” hub in London.<\/p>\n

Under the pact, AWS becomes the pharmaceutical maker’s “preferred cloud provider” and a strategic AI partner, the companies said Monday. At the hub, AWS engineers, AI experts and applied scientists will work with Novo Nordisk research and development teams to increase productivity and speed up the time it takes to bring future drug innovations to market, the companies said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Partnering with AWS is about making AI a driver of innovation across Novo Nordisk,” said Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk in a statement.<\/p>\n

The combination of the pharmaceutical firm’s scientific expertise with AWS’ life sciences AI tools in a new dedicated co-innovation hub within an existing Novo Nordisk facility will help propel drug discovery “for people living with serious chronic diseases,” Doustdar said.<\/p>\n

The new seven-year pact between the two companies expands an existing collaboration that Novo Nordisk said is helping to reduce clinical documentation time and boost productivity of more than 25,000 employees.<\/p>\n

Under the new agreement, Novo Nordisk is using AWS tools and services such as Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock “to identify drug targets, design new therapies faster and connect genomic, imaging and clinical data so that breakthroughs in early research can shape clinical trial design,” the pharmaceutical maker said.<\/p>\n

Novo Nordisk also will use Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to drive efficiencies across its operations through AI agents, the drug maker said.<\/p>\n

“Agents will be able to perform certain actions. These actions will be restricted by agent governance and guardrails established by Novo Nordisk, and automated within the AI platform and adapted to the risk of the tasks being performed,” a Novo Nordisk spokesperson told ISMG in a statement.<\/p>\n

Under the arrangement, Novo Nordisk controls its data and all use cases. Data handling will follow approved security, privacy and data governance standards, including EU residency where required,” the spokesperson said. “Direct identifiable patient information or other types of sensitive personal information will not be shared for use outside approved Novo Nordisk purposes. No Novo Nordisk data will be used to train large language models,” the spokesperson told ISMG.<\/p>\n

“Any intellectual property, revenue or value created through this partnership is solely for Novo Nordisk, its shareholders and ultimately the patients we serve.”<\/p>\n

Besides AWS cloud and AI services and technologies, Novo Nordisk also already works with other Amazon healthcare-related businesses, including Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon One Medical, as well as Amazon Ads, the drug maker said.<\/p>\n

Neither Novo Nordisk nor AWS immediately responded to ISMG’s requests for additional details and comment on the companies’ expanded AI and cloud-related collaboration.<\/p>\n

But AWS isn’t the drug maker’s exclusive AI partner. In April, Novo Nordisk also announced<\/a> a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate the tech vendor’s advanced AI capabilities for drug development, including analyzing complex datasets, identifying promising drug candidates and reducing the time required to take these developments from research to patient bedside.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk in recent months has been dealing with the fallout of two hacking incidents – a data theft claimed by cybercrime gang FulcrumSec<\/a> and another by a threat actor called TheUSERS007 – both claiming to steal sensitive data – including patient information and AI models.<\/p>\n
