People across Finland will have two astronomical events to watch from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, with a partial solar eclipse<\/a> followed by the annual peak of the Perseid meteor shower.<\/p>\n

The eclipse will begin shortly before 8pm and reach its deepest phase between 8.30pm and 9pm, depending on location. Between 83 and 85 per cent of the Sun will be covered across Finland, according to the Astronomical Association Ursa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Helsinki, maximum coverage of 83 per cent is due at 8.52pm. The figure rises to 84 per cent in Vaasa and Oulu and 85 per cent in Utsjoki and Kilpisj\u00e4rvi.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The eclipse will end at around 9.30pm or at sunset in places where the Sun disappears below the horizon earlier.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Weather will play a central role in visibility. Foreca meteorologist Joanna Rinne said scattered cloud could remain across southern and central Finland after afternoon showers. The low position of the Sun means even clouds some distance away could block the view. Conditions are expected to clear across much of the country later in the night.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Astronomy associations have arranged public viewing events, subject to weather conditions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ursa will open its Kaivopuisto observatory in Helsinki from 7.45pm until sunset at 9.22pm. Visitors will have access to telescopes equipped with solar filters and eclipse glasses. Ursa also plans to stream images through its YouTube channel<\/a> if conditions allow.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Events are also scheduled in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4<\/a>, Kuopio<\/a>, Lahti<\/a>, Salo<\/a>, Tampere<\/a>, Utsjoki<\/a> and Vaasa<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Observers must use equipment designed for solar viewing. Eclipse glasses offer protection for direct observation, while telescopes, binoculars and cameras require suitable solar filters. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Attention will turn to the night sky after the Sun sets. The Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris left by comet 109P\/Swift-Tuttle. Small particles enter Earth’s atmosphere and produce visible streaks of light.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Foreca said observers could see up to about 60 meteors per hour under suitable conditions. Meteors will appear across the sky, although their apparent point of origin lies in the direction of the constellation Perseus.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Viewing prospects are better south of Oulu. Farther north, the remaining summer light will make meteors harder to see.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Perseids remain active this week, from 10 to 14 August, but the highest rate is expected overnight.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A partial eclipse of this depth will not return to Finland until 2036. Finland’s next total solar eclipse is due in 2126, according to Ursa.<\/p>\n
