During summer months, its temperate weather and long, sunny days are a tempting retreat from the heat of the rest of the northern hemisphere. The annual Flow Festival in August, which mixes international tourist music acts with the city’s own cultural power houses in the middle of a reinvented industrial zone, makes for a tempting excuse for a trip. But the larger city, with its history of design (think: Marimekko and Moomins), unique architecture, numerous museums, and generous public support of the arts, means the culturally inclined won’t tire of the offerings.

Annual Festivals

Petri Anttila & Koptercam / Flow Festival

Flow Festival

Held at the site of a former power plant right in the middle of the city in mid-August, Flow Festival is Helsinki’s preeminent summer music festival. First held in 2004, Flow Festival has emerged as one of the the European festival circuit’s most unique offering. It mixes a premiere selection of pop acts, indie rock favorites, underground legends, and an expansive array of DJ and experimental musicians. The 2026 lineup alone includes Zara Larsson, Geese, Turnstile, Sombr, and Clipse. But further down the bill you can also find Oklou, Cabaret Voltaire, Honey Dijon, Todd Terje, and Lambrini Girls. The program also includes artist talks, chances to try local culinary, and in 2026 a live fashion performance put on by stylist and artist Minttu Vesala.

Helsinki Festival and Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival

Running in tandem in late August through early September, these festivals activate all of the city’s main cultural hubs with dance performances, opera, theater, film screenings, and even contemporary circus acts. The headline “Night of the Arts” kicks off with a street parade, and then results in numerous free and open-to-the-public performances through out the city’s streets.

Museums

View Pictures/Universal Images Group/Getty Images

Kiasma

The Kiasma, Helsinki’s main public contemporary art museum, hosts rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection of approximately 9000 works by both Nordic and international modern artists. One of the most notable works, however, may be the building itself. Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the elegantly curved building blends natural lights, the surrounding landscape, and human movement into one of the city’s modernist landmarks.

Ateneum

Kiasma’s sister institution, Ateneum, houses the Finnish National Gallery’s collection of classic art.
