{"id":144915,"date":"2026-08-13T09:41:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T09:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/144915\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T09:41:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T09:41:45","slug":"manhattan-sized-chunk-of-ice-breaks-away-from-greenland-glacier-forming-icy-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/144915\/","title":{"rendered":"Manhattan-sized chunk of ice breaks away from Greenland glacier, forming icy island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An icy discovery was made by an\u00a0international\u00a0research team as they found that a large ice island, the size of Manhattan, had formed as a result of a glacier break.<\/p>\n<p>An international research team at the University of Ottawa reported that a chunk of the Peterman Glacier, over 45 miles long, broke apart, creating a large ice island the size of Manhattan in\u00a0New York City.<\/p>\n<p>This marks the largest loss of floating ice since 2012, as the rare Arctic island is nearly 500 feet thick.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have been monitoring changes in the glacier since 2019 and have expected the break to happen for the last few years, noting it won\u2019t be the last either.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to observe and study the partial cracks and breakage of the glacier allows for a better understanding of the processes that shape glacier retreat,\u00a0ocean\u00a0conditions and ice hazards in polar regions, according to the Department of Geography at the\u00a0University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>Two more chunks of ice are expected to detach from the glacier soon, reducing its size by about 22%.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.08577633;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40318369\" width=\"641\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/phys-org-news-2026-08-137264572.jpg\" alt=\"Satellite image of Petermann Glacier in 2026, showing an ice island breaking away.\" class=\"wp-image-40318369\"  \/>A Manhattan-sized ice island has been discovered after a glacier broke apart, according to international researchers..
