Poland<\/a>‘s prime minister said Thursday that authorities arrested a Russian citizen who was allegedly recruited by Russia<\/a>‘s secret services, thwarting his plan to kill a Ukrainian American citizen in the Polish capital,\u00a0Warsaw<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Russian was detained \u200bon \u200cAugust 7 and had been \u2060recruited to kill a man who was “inconvenient to the Putin regime”, Donald Tusk<\/a> told \u200cjournalists.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Russian had been hired to kill a man \u200bwho had both Ukrainian and US passports, Tusk said, without giving any more information on his identity.<\/p>\n

“At the last \u200bminute, thanks to the action of the \u200bInternal Security Agency and the police, \u200bwe managed to prevent this execution, this attack,” the prime minister said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We have to accept the assumption that the Putin regime will try to eliminate people who are inconvenient for various reasons,” Tusk said.<\/p>\n

Warsaw, he added, “will likely come under similar pressure again”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Poland, a NATO and EU member state along the alliance’s Eastern flank, has accused Russia of “sabotage” on several occasions since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n

Tusk added that it was the first time that \u201csomeone on the order of Russia\u201d sought to attack an American citizen on the territory of another NATO country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In June, a \u200bRussian artist critical of President Vladimir Putin<\/a> was shot and killed in the eastern Polish town of Biala Podlaska, prosecutors said. Poland says its role as a hub \u2060for military and other supplies to neighbouring Ukraine has made it \u2060a target \u200bfor Russian espionage<\/a> and attacks.<\/p>\n

The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not \u2060immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.<\/p>\n

Several opponents of the Russian authorities have been victims of attacks abroad, including in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Lithuania.<\/p>\n

Moscow has regularly dismissed accusations by European powers \u200bof attacks, saying the West is stoking anti-Russian \u200cparanoia.<\/p>\n
