{"id":145219,"date":"2026-08-13T16:44:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/145219\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T16:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:44:11","slug":"greenland-delays-trump-linked-oil-ventures-drilling-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/145219\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenland delays Trump-linked oil venture&#8217;s drilling plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-CAHL5MDTTRFFXBW6ANSKT6AEGI\">Authorities in Greenland are forcing a US oil company linked to President Donald Trump to postpone drilling plans in the Arctic territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-K2X4WAEO4FBQHIK5OOOXKIAJD4\">Greenland Energy Company (GEC), a Nasdaq-listed oil and gas firm based in Texas, said it was working towards acquiring a drilling permit for the winter of 2027 \u2013 a significant delay compared to an earlier date issued by Jeff Landy, US envoy to Greenland, who in May said production could begin within a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-MHCNEJO2I5HM7HUUBO35K5YQ3E\">Greenland&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/naalakkersuisut.gl\/Nyheder\/2026\/08\/1208_Naalakkersuisut_nalilerpaat?sc_lang=da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/naalakkersuisut.gl\/Nyheder\/2026\/08\/1208_Naalakkersuisut_nalilerpaat?sc_lang=da\">government said in a statement<\/a> on Wednesday: \u201cThe necessary regulatory process cannot be completed and the necessary approvals cannot therefore be obtained before the planned start of drilling.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-H65QNCZ2QBB4FIEKDEHNKXAP4U\">The government also said it had expressed concerns during talks that the schedule was too tight to determine the social and environment impact. It previously issued a \u201cstrong warning\u201d to the joint venture for bringing equipment onshore without permission. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-VHITAO5PAVGF7ICDLCNLQ6GSYE\">The project in question is based in Jameson Land, a \u201chighly prospective\u201d but undrilled basin on Greenland&#8217;s east coast. GEC believes as much as $1 trillion of crude could be sitting underneath the 8,429-square kilometre project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-BXTDMLG33JFJPIQZIHWMHF7EUU\">GEC chief executive <a href=\"http:\/\/thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2026\/08\/07\/trump-mining-critical-minerals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2026\/08\/07\/trump-mining-critical-minerals\/\">Robert Price<\/a> said in a statement: \u201cOperating in the Arctic requires patience, flexibility and a long-term perspective. We will use this time to refine our plans and deepen relationships with local communities, strategic partners and relevant authorities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-DKIWL7JPH5BBJB63APREAYANIQ\">UK company 80 Mile, GEC&#8217;s partner, told investors on Wednesday the \u201cdelay relates to the time required to complete the permitting and regulatory approval process and does not reflect any change to the Company&#8217;s plans for Jameson\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-WIPZT2S3BVEWNEUIQUXE7RG2QI\">The British firm holds the licences for the Jameson Land basin through its wholly owned subsidiary, London-listed White Flame Energy. The licence was obtained before Greenland&#8217;s government stopped issuing them in 2021, citing climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-DFPMCIALDBCQHIWYZTQQTJUQXM\">Larry Swets, GEC chairman, has previously been reported to have access to Mr Trump&#8217;s inner circle. Carol Craig, a US Navy veteran who is working on the America&#8217;s Golden Dome missile defence system, is also a board member. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-LD4JDIZPOBCKPF2DTJQPDEMHVY\">Citadel revealed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.otcmarkets.com\/filing\/html?id=19418291&amp;guid=YEj-keMlG3vdiBh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.otcmarkets.com\/filing\/html?id=19418291&amp;guid=YEj-keMlG3vdiBh\">filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a> on May 6 that it had bought a 9.2 per cent stake in the company, while billionaire hedge-fund manager, Kenneth Griffin, owns 4.31 million shares, a 9.3 per cent stake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-CENBEHXSSBAMTFWATH24EQRJVA\">Mr Trump recently renewed his interest in acquiring Greenland due to its location in the Arctic Circle being pivotal to US national security. Speaking at a Nato summit in Ankara, Turkey last month, the President said the semi-autonomous island should be \u201ccontrolled by the United States, not by Denmark\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-XCCPY3J2UFHYLLHTS4WR5Y7DGQ\">Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected that suggestion. \u201cIt is a well-known position of the United States that it wants to own and take over Greenland.
