href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/commission-to-kill-eu-anti-greenwashing-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">was shelved<\/a>\u00a0in June 2025\u00a0due to a major\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-abandon-anti-greenwashing-talks-after-italy-pulls-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">disagreement<\/a>\u00a0between the Commission and EU governments\u00a0over excessive reporting obligations for\u00a0businesses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It leaves\u00a0the EU with a system that tells companies what they cannot say\u00a0about their products but\u00a0with no\u00a0explanation of what counts as a legitimate environmental claim.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a pity that we missed the opportunity to not only prevent misleading consumers with mandatory labelling but that we also put an end to the jungle of\u00a0additional, voluntary, and often quite arbitrary environmental claims,\u201d said\u00a0Anna Cavazzini, a lawmaker for the Greens group and chair of the internal market committee of the European Parliament.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2198088569-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8862521\" those companies that are on their way towards sustainable business models,&#8221;\u00a0she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Something\u2019s\u00a0missing\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The law\u00a0coming into force in September also\u00a0seeks\u00a0to curb the jungle of green badges available on the market for things like\u00a0seafood,\u00a0coffee\u00a0or\u00a0paper\u00a0by\u00a0allowing only sustainability labels run by public authorities or backed by certification schemes.\u00a0Companies will have to\u00a0provide consumers with clearer information about durability, repairability and commercial guarantees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What the\u00a0law\u00a0does\u00a0not create is\u00a0a common\u00a0methodology\u00a0for\u00a0proving\u00a0environmental claims\u00a0before they are made.\u00a0Instead, companies will\u00a0have\u00a0to rely on\u00a0a patchwork of national rules and court interpretation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The proposed law\u00a0was
