Maersk will apply a peak season surcharge of 65 euros per container to certain horizontal import transports of reefer containers within the Port of Algeciras. This measure responds to the increased activity associated with the citrus campaign and the high occupancy levels being recorded at the storage facilities located in the port area.<\/p>\n
According to the information communicated by the company, the increase in activity is generating greater congestion in the port environment and an increase in wait times for loading and unloading operations carried out at the warehouses. This situation is affecting the efficiency of the land transport services linked to the movement of refrigerated containers.<\/p>\n
The surcharge, referred to by Maersk as ‘Inland peak season surcharge (IPI)’, will be used to cover the operational costs arising from this situation and to maintain the continuity of the horizontal transport services associated with these operations.<\/p>\n
The measure will have a specific scope of application. The PSS will be charged on direct deliveries of import reefer containers at warehouses located within the Port of Algeciras. It will also apply when the containers have been previously inspected and subsequently transported to storage facilities also located within the port area.<\/p>\n
The surcharge will be 65 euros per container and will exclusively affect the refrigerated import equipment. Maersk specifies that the measure will not apply to dry cargo,dry cargo, so it is limited to operations with reefer containers that meet the established conditions.<\/p>\n
The entry into force will depend on the applicable regime for each traffic. For Non-FMC operations, the surcharge will begin to apply on August 19, 2026. In the case of operations subject to FMC, the established date is September 19, 2026.<\/p>\n
There are also differences regarding the expected application period. For Non-FMC operations, Maersk expects to keep the surcharge in effect until September 30, 2026. For FMC operations, the expected date extends until October 31, 2026.<\/p>\n
These dates may be reviewed depending on the evolution of congestion at the Port of Algeciras. The company thus links the duration of the surcharge to the existing operational conditions at the storage facilities and their impact on the land services necessary to move refrigerated containers.<\/p>\n
The citrus campaign is associated with an increase in the activity of refrigerated goods and, according to Maersk’s communication, this increase is currently having a direct effect on the occupancy of the warehouses located within the Algeciras port area. The high utilization of these facilities is prolonging the time needed to complete the delivery and reception operations of the containers.<\/p>\n
Horizontal transport constitutes in this case the land movement carried out within the port area to transport the equipment to the corresponding facilities. The longer wait times at loading and unloading points impact these operations by increasing the time required to complete each service.<\/p>\n
The application of the PSS is therefore limited to a specific operation and does not imply a general surcharge for all containers using the Port of Algeciras. Included within its scope are the reefer containers for import destined directly for port warehouses and those that, after inspection, are delivered to those same facilities.<\/p>\n
The established amount will be uniform, at 65 euros per container, while the projected start and end dates vary depending on whether it involves Non-FMC or FMC traffic.
