The headlights are printed which is a reasonable compromise, but the opacity of the white print looks noticeably different from the ones on the stickers, which is a bit disappointing.

The rear looks good too, with gentle curving lines achieved with a variety of slope pieces. In particular, the rear lights look fantastic with subtle blue prints on the sides of the plates, while the bottom fender features more detail thanks to some repurposed binoculars and axe blade pieces. The rear wing also features the new 1×1 spoiler strut piece, which helps to keep the proportions neat and tidy.

The interior is simple but tidy; with a stickered 1×3 slope for the central console and a shiny gear shifter.

There is ample space to fit the minifigure into the driver’s seat, while the passenger side actually has a clear minifigure head piece which serves as a stand for the helmet. The models live up to the high standards we expect from the theme, with a good level of detail, unusual build techniques, and a generally satisfactory level of accuracy. Price is comparatively good too – it costs twice the price of a normal Speed Champions single set, but the Defender is certainly a much larger-than-average build so you are getting more bang for your buck, even if the Speed Champions theme no longer presents as outstanding of a value proposition with all the recent price increases, but that’s consistent with LEGO across the board if you’ve been collecting for a while.

The only potential key areas of criticism are the minifigures – which are generally uninteresting, but that is to be expected for sets like these, and at least they have exclusive prints – and the fact that it’s a slightly random pairing.

Perhaps some fans would have preferred to get one car but not the other, and they don’t particularly complement each other for play despite both being iconic British cars. Still, on the whole, this is a pretty solid set that any LEGO car enthusiast would enjoy.

              Build

Generally pretty tidy designs across both models, with an engaging and detailed build process.

              Minifigures

Acceptable, but far from standout in a $60 set – the exclusive prints relating to their specific cars are cool though.

              Real Value

The models aren’t huge for the price point, but are packed with detail and represent better value than the standard lone Speed Champions models.

              Innovation

Excellent build techniques as always from this theme.

              Keepability

A slightly random pairing, but both are relatively well-known cars that should stand the test of time relatively well.

                      1
2
3
4
5

Thanks for reading!
