“We saw it coming. I think it\u2019s concerning for his future. I have to admit that. Personally, I\u2019m afraid he doesn\u2019t have the motivation to reach the level needed to compete,” he analyzes. “I know he\u2019s won a lot this year. We shouldn\u2019t forget that it\u2019s Vingegaard, and he\u2019s exceptionally talented, so even if he\u2019s not in top form, he can still win bike races when Pogacar isn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holm: ‘Part of me wants to criticise him’On Feltet <\/a>, Brian Holm, another former rider and team director, was asked for his take on Vingegaard\u2019s retirement in 2026. He, too, is skeptical of the collarbone explanation. \u201cHe needs a break. I don\u2019t buy that other story. It sounds good to say it\u2019s because of an injury\u2014that\u2019s what I\u2019d say, too. He\u2019s had a grueling season, and he needs a break and time for the things that matter to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

“He doesn’t think like 99% of cyclists, and he does things his own way. Jonas is among the absolute best, and although part of me wants to criticize him, another part says, ‘Shut up,'” Holm tells himself. \u201cHe\u2019s won the Tour twice; I should be happy just to keep up and make it to the finish. So who am I to criticize him?\u201d<\/p>\n

“He’s won the Tour de France twice, and we haven’t. So we have to be careful about criticizing him. He has a different mindset than the rest of us mere mortals. Most of us have competed in the World Championships many times, even though we might not have been sure we\u2019d make it to the finish. He doesn\u2019t think that way.
