He had already destroyed the shower as the Berlin authorities refused to back down on their ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rent prices have become a major issue in <a data-ylk=\"slk:Berlin as the city braces for elections;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/07\/11\/berlin-mayor-quits-election-backlash-tennis-power-cut\/\" class=\"ck-custom-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin as the city braces for elections<\/a> in September that will decide on the city&#8217;s leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Berlin is suffering from a dire shortage of housing, combined with extreme demand, which has sent rent prices in many neighbourhoods skyrocketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Die Linke, the hard-Left party that is leading the polls in the Berlin city-state election race, has said it wants to make rent-control laws even tougher to address the housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Berlin district office spokesman told Bild: &#8220;Unfortunately, the district office is unable to waive the enforcement of preservation regulations in this case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The approval of fixtures and fittings above the average standard would set a precedent for similar cases in Germany and could ultimately lead to luxury renovations and rent increases for a large number of tenants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:Try full access to The Telegraph free today.
