BERLIN, Conn. (WFSB) – A fire at a business in Berlin closed a portion of a road on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Fire officials said it broke out at Precision Punch and Tooling on Christian Lane.<\/p>\n
They were called for a reported explosion in the building that resulted in a fire.<\/p>\n
Crews said they arrived to find heavy smoke inside a manufacturing area and employees still in the process of evacuating.<\/p>\n
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire thanks to employees who kept the fire in check with fire extinguishers.<\/p>\n
One employee suffered a minor laceration and several others were evaluated for smoke inhalation. However, no one needed hospitalization, firefighters said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe incident occurred during a grinding process where a stray spark ignited cooling oil which entered a portion of the ventilation system,\u201d said Chief John Massirio, Berlin Fire Department. \u201cConnecticut DEEP responded to assist with chemical identification and hazard mitigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berlin police said Christian Lane was closed between the Route 9 ramps and Deming Road.<\/p>\n
They asked drivers to seek alternate routes during the fire department\u2019s response.<\/p>\n
The Rocky Hill Fire Department confirmed that it was requested to help provide support for Berlin while firefighters took care of the scene.<\/p>\n
