Greenland’s government has determined that the project’s regulatory process, including environmental and social reviews, cannot be completed in time for drilling during the 2026-27 winter season.

The controversy emerged after a barge carrying an excavator and more than a dozen containers arrived at Nerlerit Inaat in late July. Greenland’s Ministry of Mineral Resources said the license holder had not received permission to land the equipment and issued a warning requiring future logistical operations to receive prior approval.

The delay represents a significant reversal from Greenland Energy’s earlier plans. As recently as June, the Nasdaq-listed company was targeting the start of drilling in late 2026 and had signed a five-year agreement with Canada’s Stampede Drilling for an Arctic-capable rig. Halliburton has also been contracted to provide project management and logistical support.

The prize could be substantial, although it remains highly speculative. The Jameson Land Basin covers more than 2 million acres, and Greenland Energy says an independent engineering assessment indicates upside potential of as much as 13 billion barrels of recoverable oil. The basin has never been drilled, meaning those estimates have yet to be confirmed by exploration wells.

Greenland Energy can earn up to a 70% interest in the project by funding two exploration wells.

CEO Robert Price said the company remains committed to the project and complying with Greenland’s regulatory process, adding that Arctic operations require “patience, flexibility and a long-term perspective.”

For now, however, Greenland’s potentially enormous Arctic oil resources will remain undrilled for at least another year.

Greenland Energy Company has postponed its planned oil drilling campaign in East Greenland until winter 2027 after project…

[5
814,25015,57,823,6027,13832
post-148786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-greenland","tag-energy","tag-exploration","tag-greenland","tag-oil","tag-oil-production","tag-texas
["GET
