WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – In 2020, Copenhagen unveiled its multi-purpose turf field. Now, six years later, a new facility is in the works, one that will host the boys and girls basketball teams.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 26, the Copenhagen girls basketball team beat Poland 42-31 in the Section 3 Class D quarterfinals at home. The win sent the Golden Knights to the Section 3 Class D semifinals. It also marked the last game ever played in the Copenhagen gymnasium, with the gym set to undergo an expansion and renovation.<\/p>\n
For those close to the program, like girls varsity basketball coach Natalie Scott, it was an emotional night.<\/p>\n
\u201cI played here as an athlete and then started coaching here some 20 odd years ago in the varsity program. This gym means a lot to me. I\u2019ve spent a lot of time in here. It\u2019s hard to see it go but also we need new beginnings too so I can\u2019t wait for the new one once it gets done,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n
Teams to play all games on the road<\/p>\n
While the new gym is under construction, both the boys and girls basketball teams will play the entire 2026-27 season without a home court at the school.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re gonna have to play all games on the road next year. We are fortunate enough that we do have a secondary gym to at least practice. I know some schools who went through some capital projects with their new gym weren\u2019t so lucky with that,\u201d said Logan Spaulding, Copenhagen boys basketball coach and athletic director.<\/p>\n
Project underway<\/p>\n
The project is now well underway, and the old gym is a memory.<\/p>\n
Copenhagen Superintendent and Frontier League Executive Director Scott Connell says the change was overdue, with the gym 47 years old, and adds the project is moving along nicely.<\/p>\n
Connell says the project is estimated to take about 15 months, with hopes to resume playing games in Copenhagen sometime late in 2027.<\/p>\n
