Delhi Airport has expanded its domestic-to-international air cargo transshipment network, strengthening its role as an important cargo hub in India. The expanded network connects four major Indian cities \u2014 Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Hyderabad \u2014 with international destinations London and Copenhagen through Delhi Airport\u2019s Transshipment Excellence Centre (TEC). The initiative was flagged off by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu at Indira Gandhi International Airport on August 19, 2026. <\/p>\n

The expansion comes after the successful completion of a proof-of-concept project on the Chennai-Delhi-Frankfurt route. The project started on June 20, 2026, with Air India managing the service from beginning to end. During the trial period, around 280 metric tonnes of cargo were moved through Delhi\u2019s transshipment facility. The project also helped improve aircraft capacity utilisation from about 75% to nearly 100%. <\/p>\n

One of the biggest benefits of the transshipment model is faster cargo movement. During the Chennai-Delhi-Frankfurt trial, average end-to-end transit time fell from around 60 hours to only 20 hours. This shows how a dedicated transshipment facility can reduce delays and make air cargo operations more efficient. <\/p>\n

With the new expansion, Air India\u2019s monthly cargo carriage on the covered routes is expected to increase from 1,763 metric tonnes to 3,183 metric tonnes. This represents an increase of nearly 80%. The higher cargo capacity could support exporters and businesses that need faster connections to international markets.<\/p>\n

The government also expects the initiative to reduce cargo turnaround time, handling costs and congestion at airport cargo terminals. Delhi Airport\u2019s TEC will act as a central facility where domestic cargo can be consolidated before being sent to international destinations.<\/p>\n

A revised security framework has also helped make the process faster. Under the updated rules, secured transshipment cargo can move through designated Transfer Cargo Security Hold Areas without mandatory re-screening, provided all required security conditions are met. This can reduce both processing time and operational costs. <\/p>\n

The government plans to add more domestic origin cities and international destinations in the coming months. The long-term goal is to develop India into a major global air cargo transshipment hub. The framework could eventually support International-to-International and International-to-Domestic cargo movements as well.<\/p>\n

The expansion of Delhi Airport\u2019s cargo network is therefore an important step for India\u2019s logistics sector. Better connectivity, faster transit times and higher cargo capacity can help strengthen India\u2019s position in global air freight and support the country\u2019s growing international trade. <\/p>\n
