Finland has launched an official investigation after a Russian state aircraft was suspected of entering Finnish airspace over the Gulf of Finland, adding to growing security concerns along the country\u2019s border with Russia.<\/p>\n
The suspected violation took place off the coast of Porvoo in the eastern Gulf of Finland, according to Finland\u2019s Ministry of Defence. The aircraft allegedly entered Finnish sovereign airspace for several minutes and travelled a few kilometres inside Finnish territory before turning back towards international airspace.<\/p>\n
Finnish authorities responded by activating the country\u2019s air surveillance and defence mechanisms to identify and monitor the aircraft. Officials are now examining radar and other available data to establish the exact flight path and circumstances of the incident.<\/p>\n
Defence Minister Antti H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said Finland takes every suspected violation of its airspace seriously and confirmed that an investigation was under way.<\/p>\n

The latest incident comes amid a series of suspected Russian airspace violations involving Finland.<\/p>\n
Finnish authorities previously accused Russian military aircraft of entering Finnish airspace in May and June. On both occasions, Helsinki summoned Russia\u2019s charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires to raise concerns over the incidents.<\/p>\n
Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, the longest land border between a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) member and Russia. Its proximity to Russia has made air and maritime security a key concern for Helsinki.<\/p>\n
