Why Brussels changes tone<\/p>\n

According to the agency’s sources, European officials fear that harsh statements could be used by Orb\u00e1n in his anti-Brussels election campaign. That is why the European Commission has become more cautious in formulating its position on Hungary, particularly on issues of the rule of law.<\/p>\n

A representative of the European Parliament says that everything the EU institutions did would be used by Orb\u00e1n and that everything they said or did not say would be used against them.<\/p>\n

In addition, EU institutions are trying to avoid accusations of influencing the results of the elections to be held in April.<\/p>\n

Possible pre-election funding<\/p>\n

Despite ongoing disputes between Brussels and Budapest, according to the agency’s sources, the Hungarian government may receive around \u20ac2.4 billion in new funds before the vote.<\/p>\n

According to diplomats, this move is an attempt to minimize political risks and avoid giving grounds for allegations of external pressure.<\/p>\n

Elections could change power balance <\/p>\n

Opinion polls show that Orb\u00e1n’s Fidesz party could lose some of its support: the opposition Tisza party, led by P\u00e9ter Magyar, is currently ahead by about 10 points.<\/p>\n

Moreover, in his speech on Sunday, Magyar promised to strengthen Hungary’s position in the EU.<\/p>\n

He said that Hungary\u2019s place was in Europe not only because Hungary needed Europe, but also because Europe needed Hungary<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of the election campaign, Orb\u00e1n has launched a large-scale information war against his main opponent, P\u00e9ter Magyar, actively using harsh rhetoric and propaganda statements<\/a>. One of the key elements of the campaign has been anti-rhetoric regarding Ukraine<\/a>, which the Hungarian Prime Minister is effectively trying to portray as an enemy.<\/p>\n

In particular, Orb\u00e1n stated that Budapest would not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in the coming decades<\/a>, and also made controversial statements about the war, claiming that it is unclear who attacked whom. Kyiv reacted critically to these statements, emphasizing the manipulative nature of such arguments.<\/a><\/p>\n
