A cobblestone road was discovered beneath the asphalt on Kreutzwaldi Street in central Tallinn during roadworks. It was uncovered during milling\u2014the removal of the upper layer of the road surface.<\/p>\n

Cobblestones outside the Old Town<\/p>\n

As ERR News reports<\/a>, road and utility works on Kreutzwaldi Street began on Monday. The discovery of cobblestones in the central part of the Estonian capital is not uncommon.<\/p>\n

At the same time, this section is located more than a kilometer from Tallinn\u2019s Old Town. Therefore, the discovered cobblestones cannot be protected as a cultural heritage site: cobblestone roads are protected only within the historic Old Town.<\/p>\n

The old surface is preserved beneath asphalt<\/p>\n

Triin T\u00f5rs-Ojari, head of the advisory service at Tallinn\u2019s Heritage Protection Department, noted that outside the Old Town, cobblestones are usually covered with newer asphalt and other types of surfacing rather than restored.<\/p>\n

Whenever possible, old road surfaces are kept preserved beneath new asphalt. Sometimes cobblestones may be reused elsewhere as an element of public space design.<\/p>\n
