Trump\u2019s annexation threats should be a warning for the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people of Greenland are taking Donald Trump\u2019s annexation threats very seriously. Some people have even started sleeping with a rifle, while others have detailed escape plans, just in case the Americans launch an invasion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a hunting society, and people do have guns, so they said they were bringing them in and keeping them loaded,\u201d describes journalist Brett Popplewell, who recently sat down with Adrian Harewood on Ricochet\u2019s podcast, In Bed with the Elephant, to discuss his <a href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/i-went-to-greenland-and-saw-a-warning-for-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cover story for the Walrus Magazine<\/a> in which he travels to Greenland to get reaction to Trump\u2019s annexation threats, and Canada\u2019s failure to stand firm with the Greenlandic people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanada has two neighbours. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-greenland-threats-europe-b3025688.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> \u201cGreenland will be under U.S. control by the time he leaves office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popplewell said Trump views annexation as a real estate transaction. In addition to its strategic value for the American military, which could have implications for the world, Greenland is seen as a valuable piece of property that Trump wants to acquire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are politicians in the United States who have tabled legislation to try and make this happen, including one who says Greenland should be <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11013911\/red-white-and-blueland-greenland-buddy-carter-name\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renamed \u2018Red White and Blueland,\u2019<\/a>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If those arguments prevail in Greenland, he said, what\u2019s to stop those arguments from spreading to justify annexation of Canada?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanada cannot be on both sides of this issue,\u201d he said, pointing to the hypocrisy of Canada expressing solidarity with Greenland while participating in \u201cwar games\u201d with the American military, at the same time as the president is threatening to invade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Check out the full interview with journalist Brett Popplewell on Ricochet\u2019s podcast, In Bed with the Elephant, discussing his recent trip to Greenland where he got reaction from people on the ground to Trump\u2019s annexation threats. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenland is a vast arctic territory that is largely untouched. The land sits on top of an enormous amount of natural resources, including rare minerals, oil and gas etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popplewell says the people of Greenland would like it to remain untouched. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to see us do what we\u2019ve done to every other corner of this world. The thought of mining trucks coming in for exploitation. It\u2019s off-putting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/aug\/08\/greenland-iwarning-trump-linked-oil-firm-prepares-drill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that a Trump-connected oil company was preparing for exploratory drilling despite not having received permission from Greenland authorities. The drilling materials were brought ashore on Greenland\u2019s eastern coast. That prompted Greenland\u2019s government to issue a \u201cstrong warning\u201d to the company, and eventually delay drilling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1193\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-21-at-11.22.48-AM-1193x1080.png\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump has renewed his threats to annex Greenland, both in trade negotiations and in menacing posts on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popplewell said the people of Greenland know they are on the frontlines of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of mineral wealth in Greenland that becomes increasingly important as the ice melts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The population of Greenland is 89 per cent Inuit, and for thousands of years the people lived semi-nomadically, moving from Greenland through the Canadian arctic into Alaska.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popplewell tells Harewood that an 80-person Inuit delegation travelled from northern Quebec and Labrador and arrived in Nuuk in February to show support for Greenlandic sovereignty and stand side-by-side with its people, many of whom he described as \u201ccousins\u201d and \u201cfamily\u201d of the Inuit in Canada. They should really be thought of as \u201cone people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just happen to live on the other side of the border that we put there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popplewell started to view the threats to Greenland through a Canadian lens \u2014 because Trump continues to threaten Canada\u2019s sovereignty as well. \u201cI went there thinking, if this domino falls, what\u2019s to stop America from applying the same logic to Ellesmere Island or to Baffin island?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With so many global super powers negotiating their future without them, the people of Greenland feel utterly alone. \u201cNo one should have to cry out for help to be heard,\u201d he told Harewood. \u201cThe people of Greenland are longing for an earnest deepening of ties to Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanadians and their government should listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to the full episode on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sIzufoG1xr4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a>, Spotify, Apple or <a href=\"https:\/\/inbedwiththeelephant.podbean.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wherever you get podcasts<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The people of Greenland are taking Donald Trump\u2019s annexation threats very seriously.
