The annual Tallinn Fringe Festival in Tallinn has begun the second week of its international program. It includes theatre productions, Icelandic cabaret and Irish street performances. The festival is being held for the tenth time and will run until September 18, ERR News reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Performances at different venues<\/p>\n

Irish street performances are taking place at Tallinn Town Hall Square and can be attended free of charge. The program is supported by Cult\u00far \u00c9ireann and the Embassy of Ireland in Estonia.<\/p>\n

The festival operates under an open-access model: events are held in theatres, bars and other spaces across the city. According to the organizers, this format allows visitors to shape their own festival experience. This week\u2019s lineup includes theatre, stand-up comedy, burlesque, circus, street performances, cabaret and classical music.<\/p>\n

Fundraising for the festival<\/p>\n

One of the events of the first week was a half marathon in Helsinki, which festival director Dan Renwick ran on August 22 while juggling during the race. It was the first of two half marathons as part of his charity challenge.<\/p>\n

In total, Renwick plans to run and juggle for 42.2 kilometers in support of the festival. The second half marathon is set to take place on September 9 as part of Tallinn Marathon Weekend. The aim of the challenge is to raise funds toward the festival\u2019s overall target of \u20ac20,000.<\/p>\n

New Zealand artist George Fenn, who performed at the festival, said that fringe festivals are important platforms for artistic fields that do not yet have the support of major organizations or established funding systems. In his view, the open format allows artists to take more risks and has a positive effect on the local economy.<\/p>\n
