NEW BERLIN \u2014 The New Berlin Common Council will discuss and possibly take action tonight regarding a proposed resolution affirming the city of New Berlin\u2019s commitment to religious freedom and the community. The proposed resolution comes days after uproar over Mayor Dave Ament\u2019s social media posts.<\/p>\n

Last week Ament was scrutinized for content regarding Muslims that he shared publicly on social media. The proposed resolution references the controversy.<\/p>\n

The Freeman reached out to Ament on Monday afternoon but didn\u2019t hear a response by press deadline.<\/p>\n

Steven Linn, public communications manager, said on Monday that the agenda item gives the Common Council an opportunity to discuss and consider possible action regarding recent content shared through Ament\u2019s personal social media account.<\/p>\n

“A resolution may be considered that would reaffirm that the social media content referenced does not represent an official position of the City of New Berlin. The proposed resolution would also affirm the city\u2019s support for the right of people of all faith traditions to practice their faith consistent with protections provided by the United States and Wisconsin Constitutions, as well as the city\u2019s commitment to providing city services and conducting city business fairly and without discrimination based on religion or other characteristics protected by law,” Linn said.<\/p>\n

Linn said on Friday that the mayor\u2019s personal statement was sent independently and was not distributed through the city.<\/p>\n

Responding to questions about New Berlin\u2019s social media policy and whether Ament\u2019s posts represent an official position of the city, the city said in a statement, “The social media posts being referenced were shared through a personal social media account and do not represent an official position or communication of the City of New Berlin. The City has a Social Media Policy governing official City social media and addressing personal and non-authorized social media accounts.”<\/p>\n

Ament released a statement to The Freeman on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

“I have been made aware of comments that have been expressed regarding posts on my private Facebook page. Let me begin by saying that what is on my personal Facebook page does not represent the official position of the City of New Berlin,” Ament said.<\/p>\n

Ament said the posts were never meant to disparage any groups or individuals.<\/p>\n

“It has never been my intention to disparage or offend any individual or group including the Muslim Community. My intention was simply to share information on matters of public concern. I regret that it has been construed otherwise. I further want to make it clear that I support the ability of all faith traditions to practice their faith,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance called for his resignation in a news release.<\/p>\n

The WMCA said in the release that this “rhetoric is dangerous and leads to a climate of further intolerance of Muslims, immigrants, and other marginalized communities.”<\/p>\n

Ament said that he is taking a social media break.<\/p>\n

“I am going to take some time to reflect, and step back from social media at this time,” Ament said.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be held tonight at 6:15 p.m. at the New Berlin City Hall, 3805 S.
