Unsubscribe at any time.Satellites watched it happen<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Copernicus\/Sentinel-1\/Sentinel-1_captures_major_ice_loss_from_Greenland_glacier\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission<\/a> captured cracks spreading rapidly through the glacier weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>By Aug. 3, the area was showing major deterioration. For people living near the coast, that can translate into higher insurance costs, more flood risk and tougher decisions about where and how to build.<\/p>\n<p>Risk to this glacier isn\u2019t over<\/p>\n<p>Scientists say two even larger pieces, estimated at about 37 and 33 square miles, could eventually break away as existing cracks continue spreading.<\/p>\n<p>For now, researchers will track the Manhattan-sized ice island as it drifts through the Atlantic, breaks apart and potentially affects Arctic shipping.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"1.
