RIGA: The 13th Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF<\/a>, 15 \u2013 25 October 2026) will open with the Latvian minority coproduction Woman Unknown by Danish director May el-Toukhy, which was shot in Riga. It will be shortly after its world premiere at the Venice IFF on 6 September 2026, as the first Latvian coproduction to be selected for the Main Competition.<\/p>\n

The psychologically charged historical drama, which will have its Baltic premiere on RIGA IFF Opening Night, is an elegantly crafted story of secrets from the past that threaten a young housemaid\u2019s future amid the turmoil of the post-war years, according to a press release from the festival.<\/p>\n

Woman Unknown\u00a0is produced by\u00a0Nordisk Film\u00a0in Denmark and Sweden in coproduction with Latvia\u2019s Nafta Films<\/a>, and it was backed by the National Film Centre of Latvia<\/a>,\u00a0among others. The production brought together a substantial team of Latvian film professionals, including coproducer Madara Kalni\u0146a, second production designer K\u0101rlis Utin\u0101ns, costume designer J\u016blija Volkin\u0161teine, Latvian casting and extras director Marta Dzene, production sound mixer M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 Rozent\u0101ls, gaffer Aleksandrs \u010cerka\u0161ins, Latvian production manager Agate Prozorovi\u010da, Latvian location manager Ingr\u012bda Nagle, script supervisor Anna Bijubena, and photographer Andrejs Strokins.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is especially rewarding that, following its world premiere in Venice, the film will meet its Baltic audiences here in Riga, the city where 25 of its 28 shooting days took place, with a large Latvian film crew working on set each day,\u201d said coproducer Madara Kalni\u0146a.<\/p>\n

The biggest celebration of cinema in Latvia, RIGA IFF will spread its over 100 screenings at the festival\u2019s home, Splendid Palace<\/a>, as well as Forum Cinemas<\/a>, the National Library of Latvia, the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Kino C\u0113sis, Siguldas devons and other venues.<\/p>\n

This year, the festival\u2019s motto is \u201cYOU ARE HERE\u201d.<\/p>\n

RIGA IFF is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation, Creative Europe \u2013 MEDIA, Riga City Council, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, and the National Film Centre of Latvia<\/a>.<\/p>\n
