The suggestion was supported by Denmark, which holds the Council&#8217;s rotating presidency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"28\">The Darfur arms embargo, which has been in place for more than two decades, is set to expire on 12 September if a new agreement is not reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"34\">The US envoy to the meeting, Massad Boulos, called on the Council to take steps to curtail &#8220;external support&#8221; for the conflict that &#8220;risks drawing more regional actors and neighbours deeper into Sudan&#8217;s conflict&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Keep up with the latest headlines on <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaIdDi8Bqbr263erhw1K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/allafrica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"32\">&#8220;That is why the United States has put forward a strong resolution that provides for four key things,&#8221; beginning with &#8220;expanding the arms embargo across the entire territory of Sudan,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">The measure would also bring drones under the arms restriction regime, and increase the number of experts scrutinising the existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/embargo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">embargo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"23\">His position echoes that of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who in June described the conflict in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/sudan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sudan<\/a> as a &#8220;proxy war&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"12\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/podcasts\/spotlight-on-africa\/20260414-sudan-three-years-of-war-and-new-reports-of-meddling-by-ethiopia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sudan: Three years of war and new reports of meddling by Ethiopia<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told the meeting that the conflict in Sudan risks attracting criminal networks from abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"39\">&#8220;Let us be clear about what is at stake: the war in Sudan has never remained confined to its own borders,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It destabilises neighbouring countries and the entire region. It attracts weapons from abroad and criminal networks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/denmark\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denmark<\/a> holds the presidency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/main.un.org\/securitycouncil\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Council<\/a> until 31 August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"2\">Russian veto<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"37\">However, this proposal from Washington could run up against a major obstacle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/russia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a> &#8211; a partner of General al-Burhan&#8217;s armed forces and holder of a UN veto &#8211; has warned against any measure that might affect them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"32\">The war, now in its fourth year, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, as ever more sophisticated weaponry &#8211; including armed drones &#8211; is deployed to the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"32\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/africa\/20260415-sudan-war-reshapes-loyalties-as-civilians-see-no-option-but-the-army\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">army<\/a> holds sway in Sudan&#8217;s central and eastern regions, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/darfur\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darfur<\/a> region in the west and parts of the south are under control of the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"12\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/africa\/20260220-gold-power-and-influence---how-the-uae-is-shaping-sudan-s-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gold, power and influence &#8211; how the UAE is shaping Sudan&#8217;s war<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">Sudan&#8217;s UN envoy urged a &#8220;technical extension&#8221; of the existing embargo, while warning against changes that would hamper the army.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"27\">&#8220;Sudan suffers the most from weapons and their illegal flow.
