Located near the village of S\u00f8rv\u00e1gur on the island of V\u00e1gar, the lake covers approximately 3.4 square kilometres.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From a particular viewpoint, the cliff near the lake&#8217;s edge <a href=\"https:\/\/faroeislands.org.uk\/sorvagsvatn-the-floating-lake-above-the-ocean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creates the illusion <\/a>that S\u00f8rv\u00e1gsvatn is suspended several hundred metres above the sea, therefore earning it the nickname &#8220;the lake above the ocean&#8221;. In reality, the lake is only about 30 metres above sea level, with its waters flowing into the ocean through the B\u00f8sdalafossur waterfall. This visual trick is a popular draw for tourists and photographers.<\/p>\n<p>The Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide detailed land cover maps which help detect signs of soil erosion or habitat loss.
