Turkish authorities briefly detained<\/a> four journalists in the western province of Ayd\u0131n under the country\u2019s controversial disinformation law over a social media post headlined \u201cErdo\u011fan died\u201d that in fact referred to a local woman who shared the president\u2019s surname, with a court later releasing them under judicial supervision.<\/p>\n

The Ayd\u0131n Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office launched an investigation into the journalists on suspicion of \u201cpublicly disseminating misleading information\u201d under Article 217\/A of the Turkish Penal Code after complaints about the post, according to the Bianet news website.<\/p>\n

Police detained Emin Ayd\u0131n, the newspaper\u2019s legal representative, managing editor Ye\u015fim \u00dclker and reporters \u0130slam Kele\u015f and \u0130rem Delice as part of the investigation. The four were taken to the courthouse after questioning by police and later released under judicial supervision.<\/p>\n

The Facebook post by the local Ayd\u0131n Denge newspaper featured a black image bearing the words \u201cErdo\u011fan Vefat Etti\u201d (Erdo\u011fan died), while the accompanying report identified the deceased as G\u00fcl\u015fen Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n

Journalists in Turkey face frequent investigations and prosecutions over their reporting and social media activity, particularly under laws criminalizing \u201cdisinformation,\u201d \u201cinsulting public officials\u201d and \u201cdisseminating terrorist propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Introduced in 2022, Article 217\/A of the Turkish Penal Code, commonly known as the disinformation law, requires prison sentences of one to three years for those found guilty of publicly spreading false information in a way that causes concern, fear or panic among the public.<\/p>\n

The law has prompted widespread criticism from press freedom and rights groups, which say its vague wording gives authorities broad powers to investigate and prosecute journalists and social media users over reporting and online commentary.<\/p>\n

According to Expression Interrupted, a press freedom monitoring group, 19 journalists\u00a0are<\/a>\u00a0currently behind bars in Turkey.
