But the continent’s after-dark map is getting a little more interesting, with some less obvious names creeping into the conversation, according to Time Out’s latest survey.

Time Out’s Best Cities for Nightlife with Intrepid Travel has revealed the cities doing nightlife best right now, after asking more than 24,000 people around the globe what going out is actually like in their city. Locals were asked about everything from clubbing and cocktail bars to affordability, overall quality, community and whether their city feels safe, exciting, welcoming and diverse after dark.

So, where does Europe like to go out?

Berlin is still the continent’s undisputed winner, coming second in the world overall. Seventy-eight percent of locals rated its nightlife as good or amazing, while Time Out’s expert panel gave it a perfect 100 percent approval score.

The city’s infamous club scene obviously helps, but Berliners aren’t exclusively interested in spending the weekend in a dark room listening to techno until sunrise. Sixty-two percent said casual bars and pubs are the best thing about going out in the city, proving that sometimes a great Berlin night out can be as simple as going to the pub.

Photograph: canadastock / ShutterstockPeople dancing at summer Strandbar beach party near Spree river

The second-best city for nightlife in Europe is British seaside hub Brighton, which placed eighth in the world overall. Brighton scored particularly well for community, with 84 percent of locals saying it is easy to make connections. It also tied with Seoul for the second-highest local rating for nightlife quality, with 83 percent calling it good or amazing. So while London might have the clubs, Brighton has the people you actually want to go to them with. Read more about Brighton’s ranking here.

Amsterdam rounds out Europe’s top three at number ten globally, with 77 percent of locals saying it is easy to find community there. The Dutch capital’s nightlife is also spreading beyond its centre, with neighbourhoods including Noord, Oost and De Pijp getting in on the night-time action.

Further down the list, Porto comes in at 11th, followed by Athens at 13th and Madrid at 14th.
