Mayor Kai Wegner has insisted that the authorities will not give in to the ransom demand, which was received on Thursday evening. Wegner did not disclose the exact amount, but according to Der Spiegel, the hackers are demanding 30 bitcoin, currently worth approximately €2 million.

The cyberattack has disrupted some of the German capital’s online systems. The initial data breach occurred between 7 and 12 August, and the networks of two departments were shut down on 14 August. This prevented housing benefit applications from being processed and payments from being made for several days. Subsequent investigations uncovered additional data breaches in the transport and environmental department, with personal data potentially among the information affected.

Responsibility for the attack has reportedly been claimed by the RansomEXX group, which is believed to operate from Russia and Eastern Europe. The group was also responsible for a previous attack on the British Museum. Reuters reported that the hackers announced on their website that, in seven days, they would begin an auction of 5.79 terabytes of data stolen from Berlin. Der Spiegel published a screenshot of their page on the dark web, where the group claims to have contracts, non-disclosure agreements, personnel records, passwords and thousands of personal contacts. The auction is due to start at an opening price of 30 bitcoin.

The RansomEXX group emerged in 2023 and has since carried out hundreds of attacks against government institutions and businesses in various countries. That same year, it successfully breached the British Museum’s computer networks and stole around 500,000 files. After the institution refused to pay the ransom, the hackers published the personal data of visitors, subscribers and employees on the dark web.

“Berlin will not be blackmailed,” Wegner said, adding that police, prosecutors and federal security services were investigating the case with the utmost urgency. The cyberattack comes just a month before the city’s upcoming elections, although Senator Iris Spranger stressed that the electoral infrastructure had not been compromised. | BGNES

A hacking group has threatened to auction off data stolen from Berlin’s systems Berlin is being blackmailed by…

[99
112,190
post-154960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-berlin","tag-berlin","tag-germany
["GET
